Thank you Ben
These last few days have reminded me of some of the Steelers greats that I saw ride off into the sunset. Most memorable Bradshaw vs the Jets
(was only 8), Noll's last game vs the Browns (was 16), Cowher's last game vs the Bengals (was 32), and now at 47 my all time favorite is leaving.
Football has changed, I've definitely changed, but most noticeably Ben has changed over the last few years into something not resembling Ben. I googled Ben Roethlisberger best of videos and here is the only one I watched.
https://youtu.be/sEv7JpUr5FY
The 3 things I notice are he was always under pressure, his escapability, and most importantly his arm strength on the run or when he is set. All are gone, and it's not even close. He definitely has some flashes, but that's it.
I wish Ben would of retired after the Seattle injury like Bradshaw did, but that's not Ben, he's a fucking fighter. Unfortunately, I think he has no fight left to play at even a below average level and it is so hard to watch.
I will enjoy the last 2 games as much as I can, but the one thing I don't want to see is 2 ass beatings by my 2 least favorite teams to send my all time favorite Steeler into retirement.

Greatest QB in Steelers history and a top 5 Steeler all time for sure.
First ballot all the way and he deserved a better ending than this.
Dude spent the latter part of his career covering up Dumblin's deficiencies until the roster fell completely apart.

If I dwell on his leaving it gets me too upset.
Then I think, Jesus man, get yourself together. You are 57. Two adult kids.
But you know what..I bleed black and gold and Ben is one of the greats.
I’ll always appreciate how he helped get us two more Lombardi’s and an “almost” against A A Ron.
Like KC says above, first ballot HOFer.
We were fortunate as fans to have him lining up each week.
He will be missed.

He is insinuating that if Ben gets courted by a situation similar to Tampa Bay, that he could perform just as Tom Brady is performing. If you think Brady is more mobile than Ben, or you think Ben can’t make all the throws Brady makes, then you have not watched enough football.
The Steelers could have fabricobbled something similar to what the Bucs did, but chose not too. They chose to do it on the cheap coupled with cap constraints.
The scenario above is not the Steeler way, but it is a way. LeBron started it in the NBA, and Brady did a hybrid of what LeBron did. Don’t be surprised if another organization doesn’t try to do it with Ben next season.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.Stlcrtn1974 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 12:31 pmThese last few days have reminded me of some of the Steelers greats that I saw ride off into the sunset. Most memorable Bradshaw vs the Jets

Thanks for the video.
I don't think any QB can top a BB highlight video taking into account; pure throws, huge game throws, escapabiily throws, shedding defenders throws, getting dragged down throws, getting pummeled after throws, broken nose and body parts, running throws, etc.
Hope he walks onto the field in the first quarter, takes his helmet off before getting into the hurdle, digs his big paw into the lining of his helmet .......
and tears out the ear piece communication, drops it on the ground and stomps and squishes it.
And then goes out and has his best game of the year.

Horse shit. Not trying to derail a thread with a very nice theme, but did you notice how well Creed Humphrey played in that ass beating? Something in predraft planning went seriously wrong last year and wasn't just because the Steelers are strictly FA dumpster divers. And don't anyone come at me with hindsight criticism, either. 95% on this board were crushing keyboards demanding OL in R1. I'd wager 50% of us would have been happy with OL in R1 and 2.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:02 pmHe is insinuating that if Ben gets courted by a situation similar to Tampa Bay, that he could perform just as Tom Brady is performing. I've said since the beginning, the end of Ben's career is going to be ugly, and it's exactly what I expected.
Tom Brady is continuing to play good football, because Tom Brady has always played SMART football. He succeeds because he is the best decision maker on the field, and can still throw timing routes.
Ben has never been either of those things.
When Ben excelled it was through his ability to extend plays and break down coverage with his movement. He has never been good at timing routes; at throwing receivers open. He doesn't "see" the field like Brady. His tendencies are ingrained. He only marginally runs play action; and now he cant move in the pocket to break down coverage.
So today, you get a Ben Roethlisberger that is forced to make extra quick reads, usually based upon pre-snap determinations, and usually within 5 yards of the LOS.
If you put Ben in Tampa's offense, would it look the same as it does with Brady running it? Absolutely not. Would Ben perform better than he has in Pittsburgh the past couple of seasons? Definitely, but not at a Brady level, and not at a super bowl winning level, imo.
Ben succeeded, in large part due to his physical gifts, and once those erode, he's forced to play a more conventional style that involves winning football by playing smart football. Ben has never been a cerebral QB, and he isn't going to change now.

He is cerebral enough to dissect a zillion defenses. He has the ability to know where the blitz is coming from almost every time. He just doesn’t have a line that can stop it or an RB that can pick it up properly or know when to be the escape valve.anpsteel wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:29 pmBen, in no way, resembles Tom BradyLakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:02 pmHe is insinuating that if Ben gets courted by a situation similar to Tampa Bay, that he could perform just as Tom Brady is performing. I think you would see very similar results in Tampa with Ben, a line, and an OC that can optimize talent.
Steelers offense is just too fricken young and empty of experience and savvy!
I don’t disagree with with your comparison between Brady and Ben for beginning and middle years of careers, but in the end their talents and skills diverge into, reading defensive coverage, reading blitz, and releasing the ball under 3 seconds. Ben and Brady are almost identical in that department given all other things being equal with personnel is my assessment.
If you actually think this, you have lost all objectivity.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:42 pmHe is cerebral enough to dissect a zillion defenses. My sentiments exactly Stosh, and I would love to see the bolded. Most underrated superstar athlete of my generation in my honest opinion. Never ever came close to getting his due respect, and as you said no QB can come close to matching his career highlights video.

Last year we won 11 straight with smoke and mirrors. We had a better o-line (not massively better, but better than this bunch by plenty) and down the stretch, outside of the second half of the Colts game, Ben couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
This year, for a good portion of the season, Ben continued his poor play. As I posted in another thread, since that point we've seen moments. Flashes and even a good half here and there, of what Ben used to be capable of for entire games (even though even Ben in his prime often would look like shit for a good portion of a game and then he''d light it up).
This Ben ain't the guy anymore who is capable of winning Super Bowls, even with a radically improved roster. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
He's just too erratic throwing the ball and even his decision making isn't nearly as quick as it once was.
Ben will retire in 2 weeks because he knows it's over.

The Brady Ben comparison is fun I guess, but you are comparing him to the best QB of all time. They have walked a different path. Ben has been beat to fuck due to his playing style as a kid and the current and past line woes. As bad as this team is, despite having a split second to throw, despite having receivers with no maturity he is still the #13 QB this year. Instead of asking if Ben would have been better in Brady's situation ask how Brady would have done playing under the coaches and line we had for as long as Ben has. I'll miss him.

Good pts KC, but imo..yes Ben will retire because i dont think he would put on any other jersey than a Steelers one. But looking at SF with a good defense and dominant Oline and running game, im sorry i beg to differ, i say Ben absolutely could win a SB or even 2 with this current niners team. Just my opinion.
I'd love to see that happen. If Ben could win more Super Bowls anywhere, I'd love for that to happen.Greeksteel wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 3:56 pmK_C_ wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 3:52 pmThis Ben, weak supporting cast or not, isn't the same Ben of 5 years ago.Greeksteel wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 3:03 pm

You just have to look at the last game we played and look around the league at other young, up and coming QB's.
Ben isn't winning shoot-outs anymore.....and in this league, with QB's like Mahomes, Burrow and Herbert, just to name a few, Ben would need to win shoot-outs.
He ain't that dude anymore.
San Fran is good. They don't have the all world defense Denver had when they carried Peyton to his final ring.
There are no ultra-dominate teams in need of a QB these days. There just isn't.
Ben would need that now to win rings. Just like Peyton.

He's been doing that for several years.
WOW I am an atheist so i cannot understand the hold #7 has over the Benonites. It is to me scary.. no QB can come close to matching his career highlights video. Is this for real?? You mean a 2 time super bowl winner has better career highlights than a 6 time winner? A Steeler 4 time winner? Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Dan Marino, Aaron Rogers, John Elway etc some perspective please. I hope this does not become a fanboy siteGreeksteel wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 3:06 pmStosh-67 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:04 pmThanks for sharing your thoughts.Stlcrtn1974 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 12:31 pmThese last few days have reminded me of some of the Steelers greats that I saw ride off into the sunset.
My sentiments exactly Stosh, and I would love to see the bolded. Most underrated superstar athlete of my generation in my honest opinion. Never ever came close to getting his due respect, and as you said no QB can come close to matching his career highlights video.

You and about three other posters on this board are known Ben haters.
You and your ilk mention Ben supporters as “cult members” but you’re no different.
Jumping at every chance to shit on Ben, your calling card on this message board….just as dysfunctional.

That’s just flat out stupid.
The only people who would ever say that are blind homers and people who have no idea what they are watching on the field.
Edit. I’m as thankful as anyone for the time we’ve had Ben, but let’s be real about his abilities.
So where would we draw the line? Up to what year would you say that "up to here, Ben was capable of winning super bowls" and after that "he was no longer capable of winning super bowls", where would that line be?

Ben certainly has a better highlight reel than Peyton Manning’s, which was the assertion.
Having the greatest highlight reel ever doesn’t necessarily make you the best QB ever—but if I had to win one game to literally save my life, not knowing what the rest of the team would be, who’d be coaching, what era, what defense, what conditions—Ben would get drafted before Peyton. Peyton would be no better than my 7th or 8th pick of QBs. I don’t think there’s anything homerish about that assessment.
