“Everybody asks me if I am a 49ers fan or a Chiefs fan,” Montana said. “I watch both of them and like both of them, but I grew up a Steelers fan. Once you are a Steelers fan, it is hard to get that out of your blood. I am also a big (Ben) Roethlisberger fan. I really like Ben. He will be in that Hall of Fame someday.”

This tells you a lot about how good of a sport and how secure Joe Montana is.

Joe Montana is still GOAT in my opinion. Glad to hear he's a fellow Steelers fan as well.

Would have been pretty interesting end to Montana's career if the 49ers had traded him to Pittsburgh rather than KC eh?

I'm just imagining him with that OL and defense.

Yowzers!

Would of been great to have Joe end his career in the Burgh.

I often wonder how many more titles would we have won had Dan Marino stayed in the Burgh.

Could have been a much smaller window between one for the thumb etc.

Hard to say. He didn't win any with some pretty good teams in Miami. Then again his only Super Bowl appearance was against Montana and the 49ers.

Eh - Marino had his share of playoff clunkers. When you go back and look through the years at the playoff games Miami lost you'll find some Marino played a big part in those defeats. So would it have been any different playing in Pittsburgh?

Joe Montana's playoff resume on the other hand I think speaks for itself. Would have been something had he been at QB in '94 against SD in the AFCC game. The infamous 4th and 3 might have turned out quite different. Steelers win that game and go to the SB with Montana at QB to play San Francisco. Media would have went ape shit with a Montana vs. Young SB.

Those Miami teams were one dimensional passing teams with no defense. They are the text book study in how not to build your team around one guy- no matter how good he is. Miami went away from its roots and tried to air it out and never had or wanted a back that was good enough to make Dan's job easier. Playoff caliber defenses would just sit back in nicks and dimes and make him throw into tight windows and play the percentages by forcing him to make shit happen because they were killing the clock and limiting his chances.

With that said having him in the 80s may or may not have worked. Noll and Bradshaw didnt get a long and IMO Marino's personality is a lot more "Im going to do it my way" than Terry's so it might not have ended well.

Now I think Montana not in a Steelers uniform might have more to do with Cowher not believing in the worth of a QB like him. Joe did have some issues with the bursa sac in the elbow so it was easy to say no. But looking back we had 4 legitimate passing targets, a sound OL and a potent rushing attack- with Joe in there would have been like stealing IMO.

Joe would have played 4 more years trying to double up his ring total.

No way. Montana those last few years in KC looked like an old QB near the end. Still pretty decent, but in 93/94 not much of an upgrade over a young Neil O. Could Montana have excelled in 5-wide, at age 38-39, in 1995? Maybe, the system didn't rely on arm strength and it's not like Neil was very accurate (his receivers were great at adjusting to balls in their catch radius but not exactly well placed).

I don't think Neil was the problem in the '94 AFCC. He threw for over 200 yards in the first half, Cowher took his foot off the gas and let SD hang around to steal it with a few key plays.

Neil kept a clean jersey back there for the most part. To me I think Joe back there not taking the shots he took in that stint in KC would have given a bit more than Neil in the big game. My only concern was that elbow. That bursa sac was gnarly and limited his range of motion and kept getting aggravated every time he took a shot.
