Draft Better

Post by Steelperch » Thu Jan 27, 2022 12:53 pm

Hindsight is 20/20, but the point of this exercise is to look back at the past 5 drafts to see where the franchise could be better, and to show how quickly a team’s fortunes can turn around with good drafting. Below would be the roster right now had the Steelers optimized their recent draft picks. The only weakness would be QB, and they’d be willing to aggressively pursue someone like Rodgers or Wilson right now if they had this lineup. The Bush and Edmunds picks were the most massive recent fuck ups weighing down the roster.

Offense
QB Gardner Minshew (taken instead of Sutton Smith)
RB Najee Harris
RB2 Aaron Jones (taken instead of Brian Allen)
WR Cooper Kupp (taken instead of JuJu)
WR DK Metcalf (taken instead of trading up for Bush)
WR Dionte Johnson
WR Hunter Renfrew (taken instead of Benny Snell)
TE George Kittle (taken instead of Josh Dobbs)
OT Orlando Brown (taken instead of Mason Rudolph)
OG Kevin Dotson
C Creed Humphrey (taken instead of Friermuth)
OG Wyatt Teller (taken instead of Jaylen Samuels)
OT Spencer Brown (taken instead of Kendrick Green)

Defense
DE Cam Heyward
DE Stephon Tuitt
DT Jeffery Simmons (taken instead of Devin Bush trade up)
OLB TJ Watt
OLB Maxx Crosby (taken instead of Justin Layne)
OLB3 Alex Highsmith
ILB Darius Leonard (taken instead of Terrell Edmunds)
ILB Fred Warner (taken instead of James Washington)
CB JC Jackson (taken instead of Josh Frazier)
CB Ahkelo Witherspoon
CB Cam Sutton
FS Minkah Fitzpatrick
SS Jeremy Chinn (instead of Claypool)

Devin Bush over Jeffrey Simmons extremely painful to look at but in hindsight Simmons was coming off knee surgery and had domestic assault issue

Yep the Steelers “obviously” have some glaring hindsight draft misses.

Gotta boost that scouting department budget and for gawd sakes keep Tomlin and his “coaches” out of the draft room.

Had to look up that 2019 draft again. Not a great one.

6 teams passed on Josh Allen. Including:

Cards at 1 picked Murray
Giants at 6 picked Jones

Oh my

No he isn’t

Do you know how many mistakes other teams have made?

We concentrate only on the Steelers

Colbert is one of the best GMs in league

Supplied plenty of talent to Tomlin that he in turn wasted

Tomlin’s fingerprints were all over many of the bad picks, namely Bush and Edmunds.

Impressive work. For me Darrius Leonard over Edmunds is pretty tough to look at. Leonard went 36th while we reached for a turd.

But there’s a cap so….

So looking back the past 5 years and the best we can do at QB is Gardner Minshew?

In hindsight, every team can draft better.

You will find the Steelers in the top 1/3 of the league in all categories.

Side note, You could be the Cardinals who are 32nd in drafting in all categories

I was going to say, can't you do this with every team?

Perch, I appreciate the effort you put into this, and it is interesting to read and daydream about. But I agree with the above sentiment 100%.

Everybody makes mistakes in this crap shoot. Check out some of the boners in Belichek’s drafts.

The RB unit the WR unit the ILB unit.....I could keep going

RB and WR in particular

You can’t totally fuck up 30% + of the offensive roster and expect to compete
