I expected to be underwhelmed. Art is the poster child for risk aversion. Switching from skim to 1% milk would be outside of his comfort zone.

He's just absolutely sucking the soul out of the Steelers. We're a dead franchise as long as he's calling the shots. This hire should make that crystal clear to everybody.

Anyway, I would have spent more money on the team next season if I saw we were trying. This hire screams "just be good enough to keep fans in the seats". My boycott continues. I'm done with this shit. Sell the fucking team.

Tomlin wasn’t the problem.

Rooney is and has always been the problem.

That now is abundantly clear.
Embrace the power of AND here in my opinion.

They were both the problem and both of them fed into the other one's bullshit I'd imagine. Tomlin probably spent years spewing his bullshit about how close they were. If only he could add a guy like Rodgers and oh hey yea maybe that Ramsey guy or this or that bullshit move they could get over the hump etc.

Art II has always believed on some level the playoffs are a crap shoot and you play to win every year etc.

They fed into each other and while I can't blame Tomlin for what Art II's dopey ass does after he leaves, his stench is still in that building. He contributed to the mediocrity that helped produce this listless decision.

Christ, I guarantee Tomlin had a big part in Khan getting the GM job and whose the other pillar helping to make this decision? Khan.
Khan is reason for this albatross hire . Sold Rooney on it I’m certain. Khan came from NO org. Was buds with McCartby when McCarthy was there

Hoooleee shit this sucks. Then the warnings that McCarthy is lazy

football.

"I think that if you're going to hire Mike McCarthy, you need to do a deep dive on what went wrong in Green Bay and why it went wrong," Florio explained. "Why didn't they get the most of what they had in Dallas, especially that year when the table was set for them and Green Bay came in and kicked the cr*p out of them, remember that?"
"Attention to detail, how much time is he putting in," Florio wondered. "How much time is he putting in? That's what I would want to — I'd want to go back to Green Bay and do my research. I'd want to go back to Dallas and do my research."
Lastly, Florio gave some strict final advice to the decision-makers in the Steel City. If McCarthy is one of the top candidates, make sure to dive deeper into how committed he truly will be.

"That would be my advice to Omar Khan [and] Art Rooney and the Steelers. Do your homework on level of attention to detail, level of and number of hours put in. That was one of the things that dogged on Mike McCarthy, especially in Green Bay."

The only thing I like about this hire is it's not Mike Tomlin. I don't know what's more surprising, them hiring an old retread or them not hiring a minority. How long before Ryan Clark starts screaming racism?
Then you should be really happy. No minority hire this time.

Hey now!

He BEAT Mediocre Mike in their last Super Bowl.

So he has THAT going for him.

He’s also 11-11 in the playoffs. (Much better than the original Mediocre Mike)
He’s also 5 years younger than John Harbaugh, so he’s not the oldest hired guy in this cycle!

What was wrong with waiting for Shula again?
He is only one year younger than Harbaugh...63 vs 62

You are right.

Site I checked had his age at 67.

But hey, he’s still younger!
He’s almost two weeks younger than B2B!

Of all the prospects I heard about, this was the one I least wanted to be hired.

I think they had a good thing going for a long time. I wanted them to hire a young defensive assistant coach from another NFL team who had never been a head coach before. The fact that he had been a Cowboys coach was a big negative in my mind, and I didn't even know that he had been the head coach for the Packers in SB45.

Are the Steelers still going to follow their pattern of never firing head coaches? If so, how long will McCarthy be coaching there? Someone said that he's already the oldest head coach they've ever had. Is that true? I know he's the oldest they've had since '69...

My final thought on this for anyone who wants to defend the decision or shrug it off etc.

I was looking for the team to show they needed change, but also were actually pursuing championships in a realistic way.

I actually do think McCarthy has a better shot of winning it all at this stage than Tomlin. But it's a real, real small shift in that direction and only because it's an offensive oriented league at at this stage rather than McCarthy offering much more. He has a better shot of finding a QB, but odds that he puts together more talent and lands a QB better than prime Aaron Rodgers are slim to none.

He's a guy with work ethic questions (a bit like Mike T had on the downlow among some Steelers fans). He was known for getting massages at the team facility rather than putting in the work. He's a guy who lacked such attention to detail that Rodgers once seemed exasperated with him and wanted him gone.

He's not incompetent, but he's just not really the guy especially at his age. The hunger, passion, drive...whatever the fuck you want to call it just aint there.

FWIW... McCarthy appears now and then on McAfee show. last I saw him he was talking about some of the decision-making about practice sessions, etc., getting into the minutia. McAfee started joking about it, which McCarthy replied., "details pat...it's what I do."

It's all relative, Swiss. NFL head coaches probably all put in longer hours than most employees or people. McCarthy has had success at that level and probably does have the ability to focus in and get shit done when needed.

But the reports out about him over the years definitely hint at issues with him in these regards compared to his peers or expectations.

This isn't a sky is falling hire to me at all. But I just don't ever see it producing a ring and the ceiling seems pretty obvious. But my opinion counts for jack all like everyone else's here. It's all Art II that matters.

So was KC hiring Reid inspired?

I recall Reid completely mismanaged the fourth Q Philly offense in their SB against the Pats and that was legit criticism at the time.

A lot of people in KC were hysterical like some of you poasters.

Only an anecdote, but there you go.

I think the reality of that Super Bowl is the Eagles were outclassed across the board by the Pats at the height of their powers and it was really McNabb who was allegedly puking in the huddle in the 4th quarter that delayed them more than anything Reid wanted.

I also don't count McCarthy's time in Dallas against him. That's a clown show in general and any success there at this stage is a plus.

It's what happened in Green Bay with a high degree of stability and just about as good of QB play as you can get in the league ever that concerns me more.

I'm not as bummed as some. Maybe that's because my opinion of Tomlin is lower than many.

i think McCarthy is leagues better than Tomlin as a coach and as someone to change the trajectory of this team. There's nothing inspiring about the hire, but (and it's my big hope....) BUT if they can convince Rodgers to stay one more year I like our chances at a playoff run, assuming we add a a true #2 WR, another pass catching weapon at TE, and draft ILB, CB, S to shore up our weakness in stopping the run.

If McCarthy's marching orders are to start a rebuild asap, then they must have hired him to put a solid coaching staff in place, and see this as short tenure to fix a lot of the fundamentals with this team, so that a young coach can come in and take the reigns of a team that doesnt reek of Tomlin anymore.

They need a Vet HC to go through this mess put things back in order. People hoping for a new, inexperienced HC - that would be much better received after a couple of years of fixing this team. Asking an inexperienced HC to take the wheel directly from Tomlin will result in the bus going right over the cliff. Lets let someone get the bus running straight again first.

There are plenty of fans in KC calling for Reid to be fired after one bad year. Go to their message boards.

I don't disagree that McCarthy was a bit of a disappointment with GB after 2010. But so was Reid with McNabb, Payton with Brees, and Vrabel with Tannehill after he started to shine.

Let's not forget it wasn't long ago that teams would "kill" for McDaniel after some brief success with Tua.
