I pointed out that the suit is for defamation - not the weak punch attempt. If Metcalf didn't go and accuse the guy of racism, there'd be no real there here.

I mean, do we actually know what consequences he may have suffered or what future damages could be incurred due to the hit his reputation took from the racism thing? Not really.

Also, some people are saying that the Metcalf claim is disproven. But it isn't really. You can still find Metcalf truthers out there and a large part of that is the bullshit report that came from Glazer which I've broken down in the past. A report that almost certainly came from the Steelers and a specific guy who wore aviators on Sundays even indoors at night like a moron.

Glazer tried to give the impression that the fan was guilty of what Metcalf claimed while refusing to just come out and say it. A report that I guaran-fucking-tee was run by Fox's legal department before making it on the air. The entire report was mendacious fuckery of the highest order.

You're not considering punitive damages, which are probably available in a defamation case like this. Those types of damages are meant to punish the person guilty of defamation and serve as a warning to others. They would be awarded on top of compensatory damages meant to make the victim whole. That's probably how the number can get so big. In this case, if DK did falsely and publicly pull the race card to smear a fan as racist in order to justify his unprofessional crash out, then I think punitive damages make sense. DK should serve as a warning to others.

If someone does something so egregious to you that you can prove it merits punitive damages, then I don't have a problem with you receiving the proceeds. If punitive damages are awarded against you, then the other side proved you acted intentionally and maliciously, so I don't have much sympathy.
