Steelers vs Houston
Steelers are 3-0 all-time vs Houston in the playoffs. 2 out of the 3 games were wild. I know it's the Oilers not the Texans but I have a feeling this is going to be similar to last night.
This could turn out to be a do-over from 89 if they win, with a trip to Denver. Hopefully there isn't a fumble to ruin this game too.

I’m not sure where you’re getting your statistics from
The Steelers are five and three against the Texans, but 0-1 against their current coaching staff
Houston completely fucking schooled them two years ago
From a general schematic perspective, Houston is a very difficult matchup for the Steelers

I've now heard this a few times, can you explain what you mean? Not questioning, just genuinely curious and want to learn.anpsteel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 05, 2026 1:50 pmI’m not sure where you’re getting your statistics from

I know they gave great edge rushers and a very good defense in general. But that's schematically difficult for everyone. I am curious what makes this a tough match up specifically for the Steelers.

The fan morning team seem to think it’s a cakewalk (joe Starkey). Beware

The only way I see this being a Steelers win is if there's horrible winter weather to which the Texans (particularly Stroud) can't adjust. Snow could slow the Texans' D a step and save Rodgers' life. Bad weather could turn the game into a sloppy turnover fest, which is right where Tomlin wants it to be.
Jeems already mentioned this, but they put this game on Monday Night. That was very intentional. The league wants max drama and it wouldn't surprise me if they are more interested in seeing Tomlin/Rodgers advance over a relatively nameless Texans team.
Lost in all the dumb fuckery last night? The Rats got themselves into FG range with like one throw only to get knocked back 5 yards on what was a ridiculous call. Not because it was inherently wrong, but because fans here and everywhere on the internet have observed tackles spend entire games every week lining up illegally and even jumping/moving early to get an edge in pass pro for years and years now. It's almost become standard in the NFL and I know the Ravens have basically just made it part of their overall scheme at this point.
How the fuck does the ref make THAT call on Stanley in that moment? I'm fairly certain you could watch him all game and find him lining up the exact same way. No call. All game long. I doubt they even bothered to warn him about it before they made the decision to throw a flag on it.
This happens far too often to really even call it theory at this point. It's a legit conspiracy to use refs to influence the outcome of the games with the only real question as to what the specific goals are.
I really expect the Texans to get shafted by the officials in key moments next Monday night.
You combine that with the Monday night shit, and I'm slightly scared they may win and get out of the Wild Card. I may even be robbed of seeing Tomlin tie Marvin! It wouldn't surprise me if Art II himself lobbied to get this game on Monday Night because that clown is probably desperate for A playoff win that will allow him to justify keeping Tomlin.
Winning a playoff game will add to the fraud's veneer of greatness and give his defenders their smugness back. They'll be no closer and in many respects even further from competing for a ring than ever, but that will be the narrative.

That call was point of emphasis in preseason and the first and second week of the season. I agree with your points, but on the replay, his belt buckle was almost facing the sideline. I think that is what did him in coupled with not being in line with the Center's belt line.CKSteeler wrote: ↑Mon Jan 05, 2026 6:08 pmJeems already mentioned this, but they put this game on Monday Night. Star player got thrown out of the Colts game, I believe, for brushing the ref while talking with him...almost a wobble as he was trying to make sure he could hear him...not screaming or anything malicious...15 yards and an ejection. Someone bumped the ref last night during our game, inadvertent again, but didn't get tossed or even a penalty.

While I didn't know the full numbers, I knew this wasn't correct immediately when I saw it. Any long time Steelers fan will remember the debacle that was the first ever meeting between these two franchises...
Passing - Tommy Maddox 325 Derrick Carr 33
Rushing- Steelers 128 Texans 37
Turnovers Steelers 5 Texans 1
Final Score Texans 24 Steelers 6
Ouch!!

From a general schematic perspective, Houston is a very difficult matchup for the Steelers
I know they gave great edge rushers and a very good defense in general. But that's schematically difficult for everyone. I am curious what makes this a tough match up specifically for the Steelers.
1. they are aggressive on both sides of the ball- which plays against Tomlin's primary objective- to slow the game down.
2. on offense they will scheme to the opponents weaknesses. They'll spread out the Steelers and run the ball against nickle and dime sub packages. (This- for whatever reason- the ravens didn't do. They were running mostly out of condensed sets and/or 12/13 personnel. Allowing the Steelers to stay in base D much more than "normal")
On passing sets, they'll get the ball out quick, to neutralize the pass rush. Flooding zones, if we are in zone. Crossing routes, if we are in man.
3. On D they will put pressure on Rodgers. They'll hit him, and get him rattled. They'll keep him from getting comfortable.
The best examples I can think of are the game against the texans from 23, the 49ers, and the Colts from previous seasons
I'll follow up w/ more later
It doesnt take much to influence the game. How the fuck does the ref make THAT call on Stanley in that moment?
There's holding on every play as announcers point out.
There was definitely meddling last night.
But hey, some people love those kisses when they get blown their way.

The Steelers used (wasted) their team MVP chipping on NFL sack king Myles Garrett (pound that flabby chest Tomlin)
The Texans have TWO Myles Garretts
Danielle Hunter and Bama stud Will Anderson
What’s the game plan this week Mike?
Keep BOTH Gainwell AND Warren into to chip?
At least DeKaylin is back after punching a dude wearing a blue wig (shit-off stupid)
Rodgers doesn’t have to throw at Denzel Ward 3 straight times and lose
Oh that’s right
The Texans have two Denzel Wards
Derek Stingley and Georgia’s Kamari Lassiter
Good luck figuring this one out Mike, ya barrel of monkey nuts

Of course I remember the Earl Campbell/ Dan Pastorini Oilers. Who can forget Bum Phillips and his 10 gallon hat and quotes like
"The harder we played, the behinder we got."
And
"I don't mind people thinking I'm stupid, but I don't want to give them any proof."
And my favorite
"The road to the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh, sooner or later you've got to go to Pittsburgh."
Sadly the Oilers / Titans franchise is a shell of it old self.
On the other hand, the Texans is a solid franchise with an amazing D. It would be nice for the Steelers to get a similar mastery over this Houston franchise as Noll's team had over the Oilers.

The Texans do not have 2 Myles Garretts. Anderson and Hunter are good edges but neither is close to Garrett. Alex Pierce just roasted both those corners with a 3rd string QB throwing him the ball. Stingley has given up big plays all season. Yes, overall he is a good CB but he is far from a shut down CB.Steeldrama wrote: ↑Mon Jan 05, 2026 10:33 pmThe Steelers used (wasted) their team MVP chipping on NFL sack king Myles Garrett (pound that flabby chest Tomlin)

Texans are clear favorites no need to make them out to be 08 PS or 2000 Ravens. Their D is damn good but it is not without flaws.

Granted, much of my post is hyperbole but I’m GUESSING the Texans gave a fiddlers fuck about Riley Leonard and the Colts this past weekend.
DK or no DK the Texans have more than enough talent and scheme to shut down Rodgers and Artie smith just as the brownies did with ease.

I watched that whole game, with texans regulars on the field, Riley Leonard lit them up from the outset. He hit some deep balls, which is Orlovsky's recommendation for Steelers as wellSteeldrama wrote: ↑Tue Jan 06, 2026 10:59 pmLolsteelclan wrote: ↑Tue Jan 06, 2026 9:30 pmThe Texans do not have 2 Myles Garretts.
