Steelers to sign LB Patrick Queen

Post by DP39 » Tue Mar 12, 2024 6:04 pm

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Steelers have agreed to terms with LB Patrick Queen, formerly of the Ravens, on a three-year deal.

Queen heads to the Ravens’ biggest rival in the Steelers after a breakout campaign where he tallied 133 tackles, 3.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl. The deal is worth $41 million and fills a need in the middle of the defense for the Steelers. Queen now gets a chance to lead a defense as he played alongside Roquan Smith for the past two seasons.

F me! :o

On second blush....the $ is less than what I thought he would demand. As the top ILB FA it was thought he would garner $18-20M per year. $13.5M is certainly less. Can't wait to see the $ details. Hoping $20M or less is G$. Should come in under a $6M cap hit this year. If Holcomb is released they save ~$4.4M there (unless injury G$ is involved?).

I'm still not ecstatic about it, though.

CINCINNATI — Former Ravens star linebacker Patrick Queen is signing a three-year, $41 million contract with the Steelers according to ESPN.

Queen, 24, is staying in the division after spending the past four seasons in Baltimore. He had 133 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception last season.

Meanwhile, the Browns are signing former Bengals sixth-round draft pick Hakeem Adeniji according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. Cincinnati took Adeniji in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

So now we have Elandon Roberts and... young Elandon Roberts? B2B is right, I can't make heads or tails of what this team is doing at ILB.

I thought they needed a sideline-to-sideline LB of which Queen is not it.

seems like Queen is faster, nose for the ball.

Roberts has a nose for the ball too. Thought he did well in his first year here.

These 2 will combine for 240-250 tackles.

Roberts, Holcomb, Kwon, Mykal Walker and Robinson combined for,
combined for 4.5 sacks, 7 passes defended and 2 INT's

Queen had 133 tackles last year ( 454 in 4 years )
3.5 sacks, 6 PD last year, 1 int in 2023

12 PD, 8.5 sacks and 3 int with 250 tackles last two years.

Need to add a big body at DT

How much are we under cap after this?

In other words, what do we have left to spend?

TBC Queen played in a blitz heavy defensive scheme under Mike Macdonald. MM did a superb job as DC last season for the Ravens. Led to career year for Clowney and a comeback season for Van Noy. Also led to Madibuike breaking out and as a consequence getting paid.

Queen is a very good blitzer but he struggles to get off blocks and isn't as good in coverage as many think he is. He is ok not great. Plus he won't be in Macdonald's very favorable scheme. I'd rather PS paid less and gotten someone of similar talent level.

Queen is an elite hitter and maybe the best blitzing ILB in the league. He played next to Roquan and we all would rather have Roquan. I get it. But, I can see the allure.

The question becomes what are they doing with Elandon? We aren't going to play Queen and Elandon together so they still have to make another move at ILB. Also have to fix safety and corner still.

Do we have enough money left?

I’m into it if nothing more than he might want to really stick it to the Ravens and destroy Lamar.

Welcome aboard, Patrick. Name passes the Ron Test, too.

Yeah I like the idea of poaching from a division rival, especially the Ravens.

BUT the Ravens are a good organization in that they usually plan ahead.

They drafted Queen's replacement, Trenton Simpson, in last year's draft (I remember a time when the Steelers used to plan ahead like that. Lousy thugs).

Decosta and company could give two rips about losing Queen to the Steelers.

They're just glad they're not the ones who overpaid him.

I dunno 41M for a 24 year old anchor MLB in the best defense in football last year, that doesn’t seem that crazy to me. But there are smarter dudes on here then myself, including you Drama, when it comes to this stuff.

I like the idea of him and Roberts punishing guys out there.

Have to see contract details before going with overpaid. Smith is pulling down 20M a year so that is top end. If it ends up being 10-12M a season (some of that money is purely varnish) that is actually not too bad.

Wish I liked the player more.

If it was 1994 instead of 2024 we might have a chance to be good.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

MLB has been a sore spot on the roster for some time now. Have to approve of the - outside of the box - thinking for how to finally get it right.

This. The middle of the defense has been a major issue since they lost Shazier. I'm personally tired of half measures.

I would have traded for Roquan Smith when he was available, personally.

Queen was already playing well before Smith got there.

NO MORE HALF MEASURES!! I'm glad they signed a QB who has won, a punter who can punt and now a linebacker who can lineback.

With the Ravens signing Derrick Henry I'm liking this.

Browns would prefer to be run heavy as well.

Roberts & Queen looks pretty good for AFC North football.

Good contract 13.8 for first year (includes signing bonus) then PS have options if he doesn't work out.
