David Perales a very productive pass rusher toiling in obscurity for Fresno State.

Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
They better step up their game because so far this UDFA class really sucks.

Most UDFA’s will not stay with their first team anyway.
Was little fanfare with this FA signing.

I wonder if Peterson said it was a good idea to sign him. Hopefully it works out well.Steelafan77 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 5:11 amMost UDFA’s will not stay with their first team anyway.

My take is they did their homework and waited for an opportunity to fill another hole on the defense.
Expectation is Sullivan will compete with Maulet for slot corner. Iron sharpening iron and all….
I also wanted to say I am liking this new Steelers approach with FA and Drafting. Exciting is an understatement.
I recall many discussions about why can’t the Steelers just trade out of one pick?
Go get a good player or trade back and pick up some draft capital?
Why can’t they go and get decent FA’s instead of picking off the trash heap?
All water under the bridge now…

Let’s see if something else happens, Tomlin and his underwhelming coaching staff actually, developing some of this new talent, so they can reach their ceilings.

Pretty uninspiring group, guess they used up all their magic powder in the draft.
Posted this in another thread. I went to high school with Pottebaum's dad and I am a lifelong Hawkeyes fan. Great family, a very hard worker and the kid hits like a Mack truck. I hope he makes it!smithessmokin wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 2:12 pmOFFICIAL TEAM RELEASE:

Very cool, I posted in the Discord chat that I have a slight connection to Jordan Byrd. I know his high school trainer, he founded his own gym Athlete Ready; we were interns for a summer in Kansas City! Very disappointing UDFA haul. We barely could convince the Iowa State center to give up his farming career to come try out with us. (I'm not joking by the way.)
It took unusually long for us to get our list done and the signings were not good. This is one area that seems to have regressed under Khan. Maybe Rooney was being cheap or maybe the staff just wasn't well prepared. However, when you have no picks in the 5th and 6th, it gives you HOURS to get your shit together on UDFAs and it seems they didn't.

I saw many reports of UDFAs getting 6 figures guaranteed + salary with 250k not out of line
I figured then the Steelers were gonna blow UDFA land mostly

As a more optimistic hypothesis on this crew of misfits,
Historically we’ve done a good job of scouting udfa’s and getting them to camp. But then come cut down time, we’ve been losing them all to other teams who just want to take whoever the steelers like. Last year we basically lost every single one of the UDFAs we targeted. Definition of insanity?
Maybe instead of spending a bunch of money just to announce to other teams which players we think will be good guys to have on practice squads, this year we will save that money until cut down time, and try to compete in the bidding war then, when it actually counts (and without other teams knowing who we like)?

Well, they've solved the problem of having a bunch of guys other teams will be interested in. That center is no bueno. QB will be on the first bus out after they no longer need 4 arms. The DT and EDGE seem like good prospects.

7 UDFA signings?
Pathetic
I wonder how many players are actually on the Steelers draft board
Like what 50? Maybe 100?
I’d LOVE to see how they stack their “board”
Hopefully just not a few names scribbled on a napkin from a Mobile bar.
I do think the Steelers had the best draft of the Tomlin era but how much effort do they really put into making these picks???
Broderick Jones- finally an intelligent, necessary, trade up. Well done weidl-khan.
Not exactly brain surgery though to pick a 5 star stud off the back to back National champs to protect your franchise qb (hopefully)
Joey Porter Jr- This pick was predicted by many a yinzer way back when the kid played at North Allegheny HS. Thankfully this nepotistic pick ended up being good value at 32
Keeanu Benton- Steelers scout Ike Taylor came right out and said he loved him after the senior bowl.
-Tomlin’s big bug eyes glued to the trenches down in mobile
-Jebrick doesn’t like the player but at least I know he watches the actual games/tape rather than just an all star game practice.
Darnell Washington- the 8th TE drafted? Again, not exactly brain surgery to see the value of this top 30 visit. A gift from the draft Gods if his balky knee holds up. He missed some games at Georgia but I never heard of this being an issue
Herbig- BIG brother Nate told y’all this pick was gonna happen when first thing he said signing his contract was to draft little bro
Hopefully Tomlin took a break from watching the Flintstones long enough to pop on some Wisconsin game tape first.
Cory Trice- A rare day 3 pick with some actual elite athleticism and upside. Stunned I didn’t see this kid’s name on the top 30 visit list. Way to break out the comfort zone Tomlin!
Spencer Anderson- damn so close. Future Steelers scout Dino Tomlin gets his man
Extreme cynicism aside, I really do think the Steelers half assing their UDFA signings is a blemish on an otherwise enjoyable draft weekend.

I like this theory because it makes sense. Not that we suddenly just stopped trying or got lazy. I will add that there are only a few spots where a UDFA has a shot of making the team- 3rd QB- FB- CB after the haul this team got over the weekend the only thing I didn’t like is they didn’t look for an ILB late or as an UDFAMick wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 4:11 pmAs a more optimistic hypothesis on this crew of misfits,

I actually think there were plenty of holes on the team where UDFA could compete: slot CB, safety, ILB, edge, center, WR, and QB.
Instead they were trying to sign kids that were getting ready to start their farm careers in Iowa.

question is, what are the odds that the UDFA you sign to compete ends up being better than any player that gets cut by any team at the end of august?VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 6:37 pmI like this theory because it makes sense. And in general, our depth chart is just so much better than we’ve had in the past. So many of the backups we’ve been signing have been starters through their career, Herbig, Neal, two of those DTs. That CB we just signed has been an NFL starter the last three seasons, might be the NCB you are looking for, but appears to be our #5 CB right now if he can knock Maulet off. I love Trice, but he’s got quite the uphill battle here.
