The Big Four Sports All At The Same Time

Post by Dan Smith--BYU » Thu Oct 27, 2022 2:02 am

I hate it. There was a time that spring meant hoops, summer meant baseball, fall meant football, winter meant hockey with some reasonable overlap.

The Phillies success has devalued the regular season and the meaning of a pennant race.

There's no reason to really care about hoops (college) until March, hockey and pro hoops until June, football until January unless you have no hobbies and no family or friends.

Expanded playoffs, 17 game football, it's all a money grab but fans are dumb paying three hundred bucks to take their family to see LeBron in November in mediocre seats.

Roger Goodell is not wiser than the owners fifty years ago or the Byrds or Ecclesiastes 3:1.

OK maybe part of this is that the Pirates will never luck out like the Phils and the Steelers suck.

I largely agree. I’m not against expanded baseball playoffs. Do it like hockey and basketball. 16 teams, 4 playoff rounds. But the regular season needs drastically cut. Drop it down to something like 120ish games. Start the playoffs in early September. Wrap it all up before kids are trick or treating. Hockey should not be extending into June.

Hey…Houston managed the bye layoff just fine.

The Dodgers and Braves could have too.

Don’t blame the expanded playoffs.

I prefer the expanded playoff to the wildcard play-in horseshit.

Agree with Pro 100% - the baseball schedule is archaic and needs to be cut back. A 140+ game schedule made sense when there were literally *zero* other pro sports leagues and air travel didn't exist.

Here's what I would like to see:
NFL starts up Labor Day weekend and finishes end of January.
MLB begins late April/early May and is done by mid October
NBA starts Christmas day and runs thru August.
NHL begins early October and regular season wraps up by April 1st

I agree but I would start hoops in Nov and end by June...look how short college hoops season is

My Hoosiers are ranked 13th this year heading into the season so I'm excited, but they play a bunch of very good teams like Kansas, Arizona and UNC so I expect an epic meltdown at some point.

Baseball can make a comeback with some changes

True salary cap with a high floor to force teams like Pirates and Royals etc to field a consistently competitive team

Definitely shorten the regular season
I’m a purist and respect the historic records and stats but man the World Series should not be finishing in November

Dig the first round of the playoffs
3 game home stand format is very cool

My transplant hometown Braves have it right
If every ballpark had an adjacent “battery” of hotels, condos, restaurants, bars, shopping etc a baseball game would be a must go destination even off season

Shortening the game doesn’t interest me but this younger generation like my son are so easily distracted by cell phones etc I think finding subtle ways to speed up the pace might be beneficial to those unable to simply relax and enjoy a ballgame

A personal annoyance is the lack of a true MLB package that I can stream to watch my Braves live like I can the Steelers via Sunday ticket. Being a streamer I don’t have stupid ass Bally sports.
Bally sports
Such weak sauce
Get your tv package in order MLB.

I miss the glory days of college basketball
Those Demetrius Gore teams were must see tv in what was a fantastic Big East basketball conference

I don’t know how to revive college hoops but to the point of the thread it shouldn’t be played until football season has ended

Love playoff hockey
(Damn Pens need to stop emulating the crosstown Steelers and get out of the 1st freaking round)
Like baseball, I’d shorten the regular season and start much later
Hockey’s a great sport but sooo overshadowed by football and playoff baseball this time of year

If the NBA would just disappear thatd be quite fine by me.
I’d probably be able to watch ESPN again
Their obsession with the NBA makes most of their programming unwatchable for me.
Teenagers like my son dig it
“Hey dad let’s go to a Hawks game this weekend!”
During football season?
