Re: The Face of Retirement
Ike Taylor might have been their best player on D last night. Torrey Smith was almost totally shut down.

I bet Ben wishes sometimes that he had the Steeler defense to play against in a real game. Ben saw Ravens corners within 5 yards of his WRs, whereas Flacco saw an easy throw to Steve Smith because nobody was covering him, unless you think Troy being lined up 12 yards off is "covering" him.

I agree with B2B on two of his points on option routes...the third down, over the middle miss to Brown is all on BR...and that might have got in his head a little bit.
This O line has zero heart...your QB takes a hit like that early in the game...and at some point soon after one of theirs needs to be rolling on the ground, yelling for a trainer.

You can't turn the ball over 3 times while getting 0, commit 9 penalties for 75 yards, and miss open receivers in critical situations and expect to win on the road on a short week against a desperate team.
I guess you could argue some of that is talent, but Ben is not an issue obviously, penalties are not necessarily talent related, not getting turnovers certainly is, but i don't think turning it over is, just focus.
The biggest thing i noticed was lack of intensity which just is not acceptable.
True....Ben missed open receivers twice on 3rd down....that combined with the early turnover is three possessions killed while it was still a ballgame....can't recover from that shit.
receivers who ran the wrong fucking route. You don't cross the face of the defender running a seam route with nothing but grass in front of you... and you sure as hell turn your head when that happens so you can see the ball coming and adjust.
Ok, but i guess the point is, we left a couple simple plays on the field that really could have affected to outcome.

Count me out on this one...he looks frustrated and pissed.
People need to understand every time he comes flying up in run support it's really not always his play to make...this team doesn't swarm the ball like it use to...TP has always forced plays to slow or go deeper...there just isn't the clean up crew there use to be.
We are 1-1...it's a marathon, not a sprint. I can remember looking this bad mid season...then Lake move to cb and we were SB bound. Not a prediction, I'm all fotr bitching...but even as a high expectations fan I'm not mailing it in week 2.

Two games in, how does everyone feel about their stated beefs?
I'm even more convinced that this team lacks talent, especially on the defensive side, and that we're witnessing a failed rebuilding process. If the team doesn't drastically improve through the course of this season, if the defense doesn't start to gel and if we don't see some signs that the high draft picks are going to turn out, then the Steelers are going to be in the toilet for years to come.

A. It was the same route and same coverage as Miller
B. the only reason I suspect you think it was Ben's fault is that Ben wound up to throw it where it was supposed to go and tried to adjust his throw to where JB actually went
Here's my key: JB doesn't cut sharply... he's running up the seam and just randomly turns to the inside... he turns toward coverage, which makes no sense as a read. It doesn't look like a drag route where Ben follows him across the formation and leads him once the crosser clears into a throwing window.

sure we did-- and we also put ourselves in position where there was little to no margin for error because of our talent level and what we do with it and how we perceive our own talent's strengths and weaknesses

I made my opinion known early and often that he needed to put this team on his back and put points on the board. He's failing at that so far. Even Bill Cowher in pregame talking about how their identity had to be offense now.
Great, even Cowher wants to do that. Then quit dicking around and JUST DO IT! Spread the field and just go up tempo no huddle as the base offense, RIGHT NOW, instead of waiting until game 9 when they are 2-6.
AND, most importantly, just assume that your D will give up scores on every possession and it's urgent to score every time....
I don't know how many ways you can hear this before you finally understand
If you cant run the football, it won't work. Plain and simple
Every foundation needs the first block laid. Even if you're going 100 stories, you start with a single block. If that block fails, the whole operation fails. Your visions of grandeur are great, you just don't understand how to build them.
To more accurately put it, they need to be a hugely successful run team, they need to figure out how to control the line of scrimmage

God the OLine. I wish there was a GIF of Gilbert getting demolished. One of the worst pancakes I've ever seen a defender put on an offensive linemen.

Jarvis became Jervis.
The Pittsburgh Steelers became The PIttsburg Stealers.
They aren't worth of the Steel City; and at this point the team is 95% composed of guys who are stealing paychecks.
I don't recognize this team and the scary thing is I don't think I'll remember them any time soon.

Impossible. That type of offense is incompatible with easing into a game.

Ya know...it's really hard to not hang all this on Haley when you average 5 yards per rush and don't score a single fucking TD.

Keep in mind Dumervil is one of the smallest OLBs/DEs in the league. He's basically the Dri Archer of pass rushers.

He started last year the same way. 28 play drives are great. But if it takes you 28 plays to score a TD every time, any simple mistake kills.

At 1-1 I'm sure as fuck not mailing it in.
And all you all splash play, pass rush MFers are getting on my nerves...it's the run defense and the O's failure to score a single TD that should be the focus.
Many of you want to be right about everything every week...so you venture into entrenched opinion and favorite whipping boys at the cost of thoughtful analysis.

I agree.
Not mailing it in either, and you highlighted 2 biggest problems
I can't listen to all this "HOF" QB fucking talk with his performance since halftime last week. #7 has been clearly outplayed by opposing QB's for 6 consecutive QTRs

I expect the D to have major growing pains. The biggest problem this team has IMO is an o line full of feather down vagisoft. We have one lineman capable of playing with nasty intentions and technique consistently: DD. The rest are either pure technicians (Pouncey) or fat tubs of goo (Gilbert) or try hards (Beachum). We can't run block, we can't pass protect. What do we expect?

No, you're clueless, you just don't understand the game. This team can run Bell has talent and 170 yards in two games, the problem is more the predictability, like the "lets line up with Ben under center and Bell deep for the stretch play handoff on most 1st downs, then 2nd down we go spread shotgun on 2nd and 9, unless on that rare occasion when they break a gain on that 1st down run." You're ideas about offense are stuck in some time in the '90s or earlier, the game has passed you by, obviously. And it's clear no matter how many times you are told, you can't grasp it.

Agree 100% with this post. But i thought we showed improvements in the run defense. Before the 44yd Forsett run in garbage time, we held them to 2.9 ypc. Our ypc for the game was actually better than theirs. Didn't look that way, but true.
