Really good hockey in the second and third period but the PP kills this team again.
Why do we keep banging our heads against the wall with this coaching joke of special teams?
7 weeks of hockey left and you want to bet that Sullivan doesn't do a thing to 'shake' things up except to move a few pieces?
I'm sick of this coaching staff.
Sick of a GM who sits on his ass.
Couldn't get out of this weekend with a single point.

I’m not sure what Dubas can do. He might be limited with options. I think they need to trade Jake and get some assets, but I suspect Sid says no.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 2:36 am

The biggest problem is the coaching staff. I keep hearing how great Sully is, but the PP is beyond pathetic. I’d sit Malkin on the PP at this point, because he looks old and lost.
Playing “pass the puck” isn’t going to get it done.
I think Dubas needs to pull the trigger with Jake. They are not making the playoffs with this PP.

What does sitting Malkin do for the PP? Who replaces him?CoolShades wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 5:12 amI’m not sure what Dubas can do. He might be limited with options. I think they need to trade Jake and get some assets, but I suspect Sid says no.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 2:36 am

Right now Malkin is third all time in PPP amongst current players(Ovie/Sid). Thirty third all time. Sits 81 PPP behind Ovie playing 282 less games.
Malkin has led the Pens many seasons in PPP including this year.
If you look more closely, this PP has been an issue ALL year. What changed with the PP this year from last season?
Karlsson is what has changed.
Either he isn't a fit with this team in that regard or he is being misused badly.
Me, if the Pens had a viable second line center(they don't and it is not close) I would move Malkin to a winger.
The Pens didn't seem very interested in the first period last night but they got interested, very much so in the second and third period. Of course they fell behind in the first and never found that second goal.
Shit starts, inconsistency from period to period and a horrible PP are going to leave the Birdies at home once the playoffs start.

Agree with you that Karlsson has been a disappointment, but whose fault is that? Is it his, or is it coaching? I don’t know. To me, Malkin just looks slow, especially on the PP. I don’t care what he’s done in the past. I’m talking about this year. Ovi is also showing his age this year. That doesn’t take away all of his accomplishments, but he only has 12 goals this season (and that number is only because he is currently on a 4-game goal streak). Malkin is also not the same player he once was. If they can’t replace him on the PP, how about moving him around? He’s a big, strong body. Maybe in front of the net? They need to do something. Karlsson is one of the best PP QBs of all time (at least, that’s what his reputation is), and he just looks lost on the Pens PP unit. I can’t stand watching EK and Malkin play “pass the puck” for 30 seconds on every PP. I agree with you that the Pens don’t have a center they could replace him with, either. Even if they did, I’m not sure Malkin would agree to move to wing. There seem to be a lot of stubborn personalities on the roster.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 3:28 pmWhat does sitting Malkin do for the PP? These guys have been playing together for so long on the PP, they may not be capable of change. I don’t know. All I know is, with all of this offensive talent, they should be lethal on the PP. I actually dread when the Pens get the man advantage, because it’s just as likely they are going to give up an odd man break as get a decent scoring chance.

Until last season Malkin was pretty much a perimeter part of the PP. Due mostly to his passing skills and slap shot. Karlsson is trying to fill that role this year.
Malkin has been crashing the net more this season on the PP especially when he is on the second unit.
But Sully has this notion in his head that Malkin and Karlsson have to be paired on the PP. We all see that it isn't working and YES, this passing it back from stick to stick with no one moving about is maddening.
Like children playing catch.
Malkin might be slower now and his lateral movement doesn't look elite like it once did. but he looked fast enough to start the season. Maybe he is dinged up.
He hasn't missed a game in something like a 150 straight games.
I'll wager Sid would admit he isn't as swift as he once was. I think age is catching up with Malkin and that is why I would move him to wing. Less responsibility all over the ice.
Don't forget, he has had like 9 surgeries in his career. Three on his knees with each one rebuilt.
I think if Malkin is on the roster next year obtaining a legit second center is a must.
