Why is it a sad day? Crosby is a worthy heir -- good guy, champion, and a legend in his own right.DumlinBumlinStumlin wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 1:38 amIt’s a sad day. I hold Mario #2, all time behind #99, not the pesky #87zeke5123 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 3:25 pmWhy is it a sad day? I’m not sure Mario was worse than Gretz. Mario took a lot more physical punishment and also didn’t play his entire career outside of the clutch and grab interference era. Gretzky can only play the era he played but Mario is easily the best hockey player I’ve ever seen. Only 66 and Orr even come close to that title.

If Mario was able to play uninterupted by his cancer break, he might have surpassed the #'s He was that good! Mario had bigger problems than just cancer. He had legendary back problems. There are stories of him having to stand on flights because he couldn’t sit down. He had to have others lace up and tie his skates because he couldn’t reach them.DumlinBumlinStumlin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 24, 2025 9:05 pmIf Mario was able to play uninterupted by his cancer break, he might have surpassed the #'s He was that good! When you look at his point totals and then glance at his games played, it’s mind boggling, When he retired the first time, his PPG was over 2, the only NHL player to have scored over 2 PPG for his entire career. After coming back after a 3 year hiatus, his PPG dropped to less than 2, and slightly below Gretzky. Still amazing.
If he was healthy, he would have eclipsed most of Gretzky’s numbers. I’ve heard Gretzky interviewed and even he agrees. Bobby Orr has said that Mario is the best player he’s ever seen.
Mario was amazing. He is simply the best, most gifted hockey player the world has ever seen.
Sid is awesome, but he is a different player. If I had to pick a player to start my franchise, I’d pick Mario every single time, and that’s over everyone who has ever played.

Oh, i know all of this Cool, He was respected for his perseverance to Hockey. Mind you i rooted against him for his whole career. Respected him to death. I did cheer for him once, the day he walked out of the tunnel at the WFC in Philly when he returned. Philly crowd gave him a standing O Agree with all your points.CoolShades wrote: ↑Mon Dec 29, 2025 3:13 pmMario had bigger problems than just cancer. He had legendary back problems. Nice to know you were in the crowd in Philadelphia that day. One of the most incredible signs of respect I’ve ever seen in sports. I wish I was there. Seeing that on TV was powerful.
What a great moment.

Mario my all time favorite sports star
Dude was the Michael Jordan of hockey
Never sniffed Jordan like status with hockey such a poorly marketed/niche sport but he sits alone a top a lengthy list of Pittsburgh sports stars
I respect Sid and his accomplishments but FOR ME it starts and ends with Super Mario
I rarely missed a Pens game going back to those gawd awful pre-Mario, Gary Risling/mike Bullard/Doug Bodger teams
Sid?
Well
I moved to Suwanee GA in 2002
We don’t watch hockey down here so while i appreciate the 3 Stanley Cups, i wasn’t nearly as invested as i was in the Mario years
I admittedly lack an appreciation for Sid’s talents and accomplishments out of ignorance simply because I rarely see him play.
Legendary poster, Fractal, loved Sid so that’s good enough for me
So yep some legendary Pittsburgh stars
Y’all are truly blessed
Clemente
Stargell
Bonds
Ben
Bradshaw
Troy
Etc
Dorsett
Marino
Arnie
Jaromir
Sid
Geno
Mario WAY UP at the top of Pittsburgh legends
Shit, compare that to my transplant hometown?
Hank Aaron? Chipper? Dominique Wilkins? Herschel Walker? That’s literally it.
Falcons fan would list Deion but the Steelers lengthy list of greats shits all over most cities let alone this pathetic sports town
Anyway
Jordan
Tiger
Babe Ruth
Mario (yesss Mario)
That’s MY sports Mt Rushmore
I could add Gretzky, Magic, Ali, Ohtani, and many more but NONE of those dudes made me sit at the edge of my seat the way Mario did
He touched that puck the hairs on the back of my neck stood up because i just knew something AWESOME was about to happen
Damn i miss watching that guy play the great game of hockey
Sucks the Pens and the rest of Pittsburgh sports teams kinda SUCK
It’ll turn back around
(Hopefully sooner rather than later)
YOU SUCK, Tomlin!
