I didn't read it that way. I think he's suggesting the rules make defenders tackle low. Shazier collided with the runner's thigh or knee, I think. It was a fluke. Not everybody will make a "proper" tackle 100% of the time. Troy P tackled like Shazier his whole career. I suppose he never learned to tackle properly either?

I believe Polamalu had better technique than Ryan Shazier, even tho both were(are - his career may not be over) wreckless players. Not because of his injury. Just instinctually Troy was better, along with his agility.

That's how I interpret the Shaz injury too - he has to own this based on his history of tackling with his head down.

So the whole discussion of laying a strong hit is moot. That's no longer football. Heads up tackling means there is no "hit." Just a soft, wrap your arms around the runner and let him drag you for 5 -10 more yards. This is exactly what Mitchell is talking about. I'm guessing he's looking to lay a hit with his shoulder. Look at mitchell's last hit on the brownie receiver that let the ball go through his hands. A moving target doesn't allow you to micro manage your trajectory. You take your chances. I'm not denying shaz has speared. But that kind of hit happens thousands of times each sunday. The angle of the body, spinal cord, and a moving target makes it a risky proposition. And that's what Mitchell is talking about. it's a violent sport that can result in injury.

Being in the Blue Band got me some connections to the Penn State football program...I got a lot more behind the scenes info on the 1985-86 Nittany Lions I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I also covered our football team for the school newspaper, and our local football conference for a regional newspaper when I was in high school.

Not to mention Ton Donahoe was my driving instructor, and many of my lessons consisted of driving to the Steelers’ offices in Three Rivers Stadium.
