Cortez Allen released
My only question is why didn't this happen a month ago?

Not a June 1 designation for Cortez Allen, which is surprising. Saved $1.7 instead of $4.4 million this year. But he's off the books now

We're in pretty good shape cap wise so the pre June 1 cut makes sense. The total cap space saved over the next two years is the same regardless of the type of cut. Just means we have less this year but more next year with this designation.

Telegraphing your draft focus is something this team does not fear, obviously. IMO, wait for the post June 1 cut save more money and not telegraph your draft intentions. I expect another double dip at the DB position this draft. Not to mention a UDFA or two....

I expect them to re-sign Cortez at or near vet minimum.

I bet they still don't take a corner in the first round.

I'll be surprised if they do but haven't ruled it out either.

you guys know they said weeks ago they were looking to re-sign him at a minimum contract, right?
This is not what I would do, I'm just predicting based on what they themselves said they were attempting to do... because that's what they generally do.

No, we won't resign him he will instead join Dick LeBeau over in Tennessee.
Kudos for them just taking all of the cap hit this year, get him off the books entirely as fast as you can. I can't remember a worse contract extension being given out to a player and the woeful production that Allen had. To me it is just one of the worst contracts we have ever given out. This can't happen again, hopefully they learn something from it.
In terms of telegraphing moves? What the hell, I wish people would stop with this line of thinking, it makes no sense. So, we had interest in Maxx Williams leading up to the 2015 draft and the Ravens traded up one spot in front of us to take Maxx in round 2. Oh, we should not have telegraphed our moves!!! If we had shown no interest in Maxx and kept it secret then the Ravens would not have traded up to take Maxx just to spite us!!
The reality is that the Ravens did not move up in front of us to PREVENT us from getting a player, they were doing so to find a replacement for Dennis Pitta, we just happened to be in front of them in the second round and they feared that we MAY have picked Maxx. But there may have been other teams talking to Arizona for that pick in the second round, we may never know.
I had predicted that Golson may go in the second round and sure enough the Steelers took him with their second pick. I think he was always the target in the second round. If anything it is funny that the Ravens gave up a 5th round pick to move up to take Williams and a year later we sign LaDarius Green. It all worked out beautifully. For you conspiracy minded folks, maybe Colbert and the Steelers were feigning interest in Maxx Williams so that the Ravens would chase that butterfly thus opening the way for us to draft Golson who they really wanted.
Back to Allen, to me he really disappointed in that mentally he was not tough enough. Forget about the injuries, Allen started to become lazy on the field. I remember watching some plays where the action was a little away from him and he was lightly jogging in the general direction giving a half-hearted "effort". No hustle, no extra effort. You never quit on a play. He had size, length and speed and he became this very soft player who played small.
We have all been guilty of hoping that somehow he would snap out of this funk, but it is no "funk", this is who he is, a bust, a guy who will probably be out of the NFL in two years time.

you're probably right
however, if Cortez doesn't get a better offer elsewhere, I doubt seriously both sides wouldn't be amenable to a deal. They do love "their" guys who already know the system.

But I would argue B2B, that Allen does not necessarily have an advantage by knowing the system. After all, what is our "system" anymore? It is changing, it is evolving, it is no longer Dick LeBeau running the show and Tomlin/Butler seem to want to break free from the shackles of it as fast as they can.
Senquez Golson in the second round last year. This off season they have brought in other short CBs like Jonathan Jones, Cyrus Jones, and Young for visits. Maybe they don't care about CBs with length anymore?
The interest in DTs that are traditionally meant for 4-3 defenses? LeBeau would never have considered any of them.
Anyway, I just don't see how Allen's experience is that much of an advantage in Pittsburgh anymore. He would be better off going to Tennessee and playing in Dick LeBeau's defense, as that is what he is really familiar with.
Doesn't anybody remember some of the 4-3 looks and some of the Tampa 2 coverage looks in the secondary that Butler/Tomlin were experimenting with last preseason? Remember how we were giving up huge plays, how Shmarko was getting abused, how they quickly abandoned most of that? I think they want to change into something completely different on defense but they realized that they would not be able to do it all in one offseason.
We now have people talking of how our defense is now a 2-4-5 and how that is etched in stone and can be used to decipher who they target in the draft. Wha? No, I would argue that what we saw last season was a transitional defense between what was Dick LeBeau's 3-4 and what will be Butler's defense of 2017. The two years of 2015-2016 will be an evolution of players coming and going and a new system falling into place on defense.
This is the most exciting draft in a long time for me because we truly don't have any players on defense that are off limits.

it's only that they tried to renegotiate his contract-- they obviously had interest in him staying beyond what I expeced

I thought what I read was that they asked him to take a pay cut and he told them to fuck off. I might be wrong on the fuck off part, though.

Perhaps it was feigned scrunge. Perhaps the whole Revis thing was feigned too. Or perhaps they were actually interested enough to draft that certain player and unfortunately it back fired by "feigning it" and yes I agree we'll never know.
It's obvious what the Rams intend to do. It was obvious what the Redskins intended to do but they were/are in a position where it doesn't matter who now knows the draft target.
It certainly can be argued either way. I think the way they approached this one is similar. All the secondary player visits (we're aware of) are blatantly obvious in addition to the releasing of Allen allowing several secondary players to leave via FA says, yeah we intend on drafting secondary. I think it's a misdirect/distraction as they really want DLine/edge. Will they eventually draft secondary players? Yeah they will. That's my conspiracy theory and I'm sticking to it.

I just think teams know each other too well and that it is hard to keep secrets. When Joel Steed retired and we needed a new NT, the Steelers raided the Bengals for Kimo Von Oelhoffen. He eventually moved to DE when Casey Hampton was drafted. When we needed a new WR coach we raided the Browns for Bruce Arians. When we were trying to find depth behind Deangelo Williams we added the former Baltimore Raven Fitz Toussaint and we brought in another former Raven in Jacoby Jones to try and improve the return game.
The teams in our division know us and we know them. Teams scout other teams, even teams outside of their division. There really are no secrets. Teams in our division knew our secondary was bad and cutting Allen does not change that one way or the other. We were going to draft for the secondary regardless of what they did with Allen.
I just don't see any CBs that are worth taking in the first round, even at 25. I wouldn't even take some of these guys in round 2, they just look like busts to me. Either they have failed a drug test, are over-aged and going to turn 24, or have no ball skills or are just too plain grabby and will be penalized too often. Better to take a short Golson type CB in round 3 or 4.
