Annual GM rankings

Post by Steeldrama » Thu Apr 14, 2016 1:09 am

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/6 ... -2016?pg=1

Belichick ranked #1 (again)
Colbert ranked #13 (19 last yr)
Super bowl champ John Elway #2
Alabama Ozzie Newsome #4

I think Colbert deserves top 10 but that's just me.

I'll post exactly the same thing I said last year: Who is Patrick Daugherty and why should I give a crab's ass about his opinion?

People want to defend a GM who put out a terrible secondary in 2015 and then does essentially nothing to improve it in 2016 (so far anyway). A generational QB with 2 maybe 3 years left and you dont go for broke when he is at his zenith?? Elway did exactly that, went for it and got a a SB. Colbert is ranked exactly where he should be in this article, middle of the pack.

Either that, or a Ravens fan. Can someone please explain to me how on earth Ozzie could be ranked by anyone THAT high? Because he supposedly stole Maxx F'n Williams out from under the Steelers noses during last years draft? Gimme a fuckin break.

I don't know that Elway at 2 is that odd. Hard to argue with what he's done, small sample size and all.

yeah, I get it.
But I think if you ask the average fan outside of Denver, not sure Elway would even be listed as a top GM.
Like they say though, Winners get to write their own history I guess.

The 2010s haven't been so kind to Colbert. You'll hear, well, we have to rebuild the defense. Well, elway rebuilt a whole team in about 3 seasons. That's why they're where they are and we're where we are.

Colbert 200-2010: nomworse than #2
Colbert 2011-present: no better than #8-10 range

Winning the SB saved Elway. They are a fumble away from being one and done and him being essentially being questioned for the moves he made. That team is going to be the Buddy Ryan Eagles this year and if the Raiders and Chiefs are as advertised they are looking at 3rd in the division with a journeyman QB.

Not sure about that myself. The broncos got there twice so far. Yeah they got whooped first time, but it was to a team that's doing a similar team approach. Seattle built a contender by moving fast on the personnel side. In fact you could argue the broncos copied them.

Meanwhile the patsies always sorta do that, flipma chunk of ntheir roster, throw together some unknowns and high price fas and they're usually right back near the top.

That to me is the main thing steelers haven't nailed yet. Every season is a new season. You beg borrow and steal to get the best players on the field possible and make your run and notnworry about 5 years down the road.

I'd say that's a pretty good assessment. When we review by the end of the decade my guess is he will be top 5.

I need to rant on Ozzie for a second. First off, Ozzie did not draft several of the core players of the Ravens teams in the 2000s (specifically Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Jon Odgen). Sure, Ozzie has made plenty of great draft picks, but he's also taken his fair share of busts (Kyle Boller, Mark Clayton, Sergio Kindle, Matt Elam). Baltimore's draft classes in 2005, 2010, and (to an extent) 2013 were all terrible. People praise Ozzie as a drafting guru when he's been no better than Colbert, Belichick, Ted Thompson, or any other solid GM.

Now, lets compare Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh over Ozzie and Colbert's tenure (since 2003):

Overall Record:
Steelers: 132-75-1
Ravens: 120-88

Division Titles:
Steelers: 5
Ravens: 4

Playoff Appearances:
Steelers: 8
Ravens: 8

Super Bowls:
Steelers: 3 appearances, 2 victories
Ravens: 1 appearance, 1 victory

Losing Seasons:
Steelers: 1
Ravens: 3

The Ravens have the better head-to-head record (16-13) since 2003, but by any objective measure, the Steelers have been the more successful franchise. Yet, somehow, this dipshit considers Ozzie a Top-5 GM while Colbert can barely crack the Top 15. And don't even get me started on the Bengals.

Colbert - Paying a franchise QB since 2007.
Elway - Not paying a franchise QB until 2013. 1 top 5 pick in the last 5 years.

All it means is that Colbert had less leeway for a bad draft and Elway could sign FA to make up any difference.

What the hell are you talking about? That's pretty damn good GM work, with very little downside.

Point the first. It's not just drafting. That's a chunk, sure. But there's a heckofa lot more.

Point the second, the offense has been very good. Defense has been holding this team back. But hey that's all part of it. Too bad the Broncos seah aka patsies et al aren't waiting around the big reveal of the rebuilt defense.
