As I do every so often, especially this time of year, I was lurking around some of the slower half dozen or so Steeler message boards. Relevant to this discussion I came across this rare candid photo of Ben engaged in his his training regiment.

It looks like he was caught in the act of doing curls. I would assume that the weight starts our heavy and gets lighter with each set.

By the looks of that one picture, a few more trips to the Buffet and Tomlin could start at NT.

I think this will do the exact opposite. It will only bring out the "I told you so" crowd.
So, you can look forward to that....

good for Ben.
none of us play professional football.............and know how it feels to be 15-20 pounds heavier, just fitting into pants, walking up a few flight of stairs, doing something strenuous, etc.
so hoping getting closer to 250-260 will make a little difference in sliding quicker in the pocket, avoiding a handful of more hits, sacks, scrambling a bit more, rolling pockets, bootleg pass, etc. if not keeping him fresher in the 4th quarter.
hope he continues with his training into the OTA's and camp.
hope he grabs his WR's, especially Coates, Ladarius and Jesse James..............to get an early start.

As far as Big Ben and his offseason training goes - meh, whatever. Just stay healthy for the full season.

Hoping there turns out to be more substance to this than the days of Bettis coming into camp "in the best shape of his career".

Yeah but this time he actually looks noticeably thinner. Hopefully he keeps it up

Good. Love me some BB but he was a glass doll last year. Seems like he's being honest with himself and realizing he needs to be in better shape going into next season, as that can only help for a variety of reasons. I want this dude around for 5-6 more years.

absolutely.
no reason he should not be in the best shape of his life ..........every year.
more nimble.
quicker feet.
quicker to get out of the pocket.
to avoid the rush.
get away from falling players quicker
better scrambling.
a sharper body is a sharper mind.

Slightly off topic, but how many more years do you think Brady plays?

The actual point of this move on his part, if you're not carrying a 1,000 lb agenda is that he was carrying extra weight to absorb the hits he was getting with league-high regularity. Now that his OL is protecting him better and he is getting the ball out faster... it makes sense to once again go back to the trimmer build... you know, like he used to have back when his OL protected him well.

I see 2. The guy is still playing at a very high level, but when you reach his age the drop off can be very sudden. Wouldn't completely shock me if he had a down year this year after all the hits he took this past season.

Ben was doing P90x with his mom a few years ago. The problem has been he's been hurt and rehabbing after the season. The better protection and the knee/foot injuries have forced him to lighten up. I think that if the OL was the same it was 5 years ago- he probably would have retired if those leg injuries kept reoccurring.
Considering the OT presented--I think that the Patriots are looking at a 1-2 year window with Brady. I might be in the minority but The AFCE defenses have gotten a lot better up front and will force the issue. Unless they make a talent upgrade on the OL quickly, I just dont think that the Pats offensive line (and thus Brady) can hold up to that week end and week out.

Yeah,,Ben was really sacrificing for the team with that gut and love handles.
The real non-agenda point is Ben is not a workout warrior, and now he's getting up in age and he's taken a lot of lower body injuries recently. He needs to keep his weight down, and take some pressure off the joints in order to increase his longevity.

Plus he was really waddling around last year with zero escapablity when under immediate pressure. Here's hoping that he can work his way into being able to do some football like running drills without hurting himself. 34 isn't ancient but it isn't 16 either. Core strength might be a nice touch.

That waddling was all part of the master plan to "absorb" blows!!

carrying a 1,000 lb agenda
OK.
Just a 270+lb agenda.
Lol.
I've been to several training camps. Always noticed how easy Ben takes it.
Yeah he has never been a workout Warrior. Neither have I. LOL. But my job is not affected if I'm not in the best shape of my life. His is.
And I don't have 250 to 300 pound angry players chasing me who are looking to hurt me, knock me out of the game with hopes to add to their resume for a better chance at one last big paycheck of their lives.
If Ben wants to match Terry with Lombardi trophies as he stated a few years ago.....it starts with him being the best he can be. That will not be the case if he is playing 30-40 pounds overweight. I don't think any athlete can be the best they can be 30-40 # heavy...sans an old school nose tackle.
There is nobody that wants Ben to be the best he can be more than I do....and the rest of you guys. I expect him to have the best season of his career.

Now this is as fine an example of post hoc rationalization as I have ever seen.
And I was never one to be overly concerned with Ben's weight but come on, man! It is OK to criticize Ben. Do we really have to try and rationalize away every single goddam critique of the guy?
