Could 2 former 3rd rounders be gone ?
I guess it’s not impossible to see both Wilson and Johnson off the 2026 team. I would hope they can at least try to move them for possible late picks in 2027.
The two big maulers we put on the practice squad last year would have given us more than Kaleb Johnson.
Dumb pick. Should have taken a WR or other position there.
Was that one on Jibbs or the “Khan Artist”.
Likely both.

Both of those “maulers” are failed NFLers. They’ve both kicked around the league for several years and have been big fat zeros at every stop.
Johnson has one season playing for an imbecile. I say give him one more season before we flush.
I'm not saying he needs to be flushed. I'm saying we needed other positions (WR) much more than we needed to burn a 3rd rounder on what was guaranteed to be a 3rd stringer last year. High draft capital for a kid that was going to be 3rd in the pecking order anyways.
And one of those "failed NFLers" has 2,946 career rushing yards on 455 attempts for a pretty impressive average of 6.5 ypc. On top of that scored 29 TDs while throwing in almost 500 yards receiving.
I'm not saying he is a star. I'm saying he would have been MORE than adequate as our 3rd RB last year freeing up the "Khan Artist" to draft a badly needed WR in the 3rd round.
Nichols meanwhile appeared to run with some violence. Something that was a missing component from our RB room.
Again, not saying those guys are stars. I'm saying we had a couple of options to serve as 3rd RB instead of burning a 3rd rounder on one. One that so far hasn't looked impressive even once.

Who is this player? The two practice squad players from 2025 are Trey Sermon and Lew Nichols. Sermon has just over 500 rushing yards in 5 seasons, and in 3 seasons Nichols has no official stats. And one of those "failed NFLers" has 2,946 career rushing yards on 455 attempts for a pretty impressive average of 6.5 ypc. Yes, a WR in round 3 would’ve made sense, but I disagree that Johnson was drafted as a third stringer. Najee had just walked and there was nothing in Gainwell’s NFL career to suggest they were going to get team MVP play from him. Hell, some believed he was being drafted as Najee’s eventual replacement as the starter. But then the kid had the awful bonehead mistake against Seattle and the amazing players coach buried him so deep, he may not see the light of day for several years.
Johnson might end up as another failed Tomlin draft pick, and Wilson too. If so… two more names to add to the Hall of Fame head coaches fuck up list!
My bad on that one. Those were his college stats. I didn’t look at the years and thought those were his NFL stats with prior teams.Who is this player?
Oops.
And I didn’t say drafted to be a 3rd stringer. Just that with Warren and Gainwell already there he was going to be a 3rd stringer last year.
Hopefully he looks much better this year.
Give Wilson and Johnson a chance with the new coaches and system, don’t forget how pathetic Tomlin was as well as Arthur Smith.

I agree to allowing both the opportunity to prove their worth and they belong on the roster.
Locking them down as a roster spot holder based on their draft status would be dumb.
Nichols was if briefly somewhat impressive with his run style. Aggressive and violent makes for an entertaining game.
Sermon I don’t recall anything that stood out but I did notice the other PS back Hurelman seemed solid running and catching the ball.
All the competition will thin the herd some. Realistically those guys are more likely to be on another roster this season.

They didn’t go WR because they believed Wilson was going to be the guy

This makes me believe Jibbs was the one who pushed to draft Wilson.
Jibbs is never wrong.
I hope Johnson gets a look this year. He may suck, but he was completely screwed by Tomlin and the coaching staff because of that kickoff gaff.
That cost the team 7 precious points and more importantly, it ran zero time off the clock. That is not Tomlin ball.

Totally agree cool shades. I remember at the senior bowl how Tomlin was crazy about Wilson and even put him through Drills there. I agree that Tomlin shafted Johnson and hopefully The new staff will give him a chance to prove what he did at Iowa. I watched a lot of their games and even though other teams went out to stop the run he stilled preformed

They signed a big name in free agency, traded up for a WR in Rd 2, and drafted a RB who is probably a more dangerous slot receiver right now than Wilson, so I'm not sure about your assessment of Wilson's situation.steelmann58 wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2026 7:06 pmThey didn’t go WR because they believed Wilson was going to be the guy
