After multiple playoff flops and 3 years of missing the playoffs, the Pens finally cut ties with their “Coach Mike” despite early success

While Sullivan didn’t have the NHALS narrative or quite the length of tenure that Tomlin has, the rest of the resumes are similar…. Early titles but no post season success since 2017. Also, in both cases, management talk about how their Mike would be picked up quickly if he leaves their team. That may be true but if you can’t win with the team you are with, it’s time to move on.
If only the Steelers followed suit this time…

Sullivan's record easily eclipses Tomlin's but I don't hear any talk that he is a shoo in for NHL HOF.
Or McCarthy in the NFL who has a similar record and who beat Mediocritude in the SB.
BTW Shadeur was apparently taking Face Time calls with friends in the middle of NFL interviews so he did this to himself. Word gets around and that's not collusion, that's reputation.

That sigh of relief you heard coming from Ohio was me. Sullivan finally getting canned was about 5 years too late.
Mike Tomlin = Mike Sullivan. So many corraleries between these 2 men it's uncanny:
- Early success with another person's team.
- Getting to coach generational talent in their prime.
-More concerned about winning press conferences than actually coaching.
Must be the water in Pittsburgh that makes people believe that coaches in this city are infallible and they are to be defended to the death.

But Blysma could not get the team over the top and Cowher did.
Your analogy would work if Tomlin came on in 2005 and opened up the trickeration like Cowher did.

Uh yes, Bylsma won the Cup with the Pens in 2009. The year before they lost in the Cup finals with Therrien as coach.Dan Smith--BYU wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 7:57 pmBut Blysma could not get the team over the top and Cowher did.

The Pens stubbornly refused to move on from Bylsma too, only canning him in 2014 after blowing multiple 3-1 playoff series leads.
Pens hired Mike Johnston, who was an absolute circus. Sullivan comes from WBS to take over the Pens and he invigorates the players by playing a more aggressive style which lead to Back to Back Cups
