The Outlier - trending upward
2023 his final stats were 7 receptions on 10 targets for 61 yards and a long of 12 yards, no TDs
He played in all 17 games
Through 7 games this year, he has 10 receptions on 11 targets for 91 yards, a long of 20 yards and 1 TD
Those roll out passes to him are nice, but I’d like to see him used on some diff routes also. He’s a punishing runner after the catch….
A pre-draft Top 5 selection by our resident draft guru, he’s turning into a viable second TE option for Wilson/Fields.
With Muth, him and Heyward his numbers will never be huge but he’s definitely getting more involved…which we all sort of expected under A Smith
I’m happy to see The Outlier more involved

I like how Dave Bryan puts it…if they roll him out and he’s in space running at you then DBs are forced to make some “business decisions” about tackling him.

( still think he would be an easy 2-3 catches a game chipping and running straight 5-7 yards and turning around. He is massive, LB would have to run thru his back ) -REDZONE.

Obliteration Is Imminent
Not sure if this was the same play........
But Sauce came out of the game a few plays here and there, seemed a bit banged up.
Najee, Darnell, Mooth, even Warren...deliver some blows.
Dealing with Pickens all game is a physical matchup as well.

And...what the fuck kinda name is Sauce!!
Oh...as you all know, Pickens stat line doesn't even include the DPI he drew on Sauce, setting up the huge TD before halftime

Maybe we can build up his trade value and squeeze a first rounder out of him!

We're being facetious, Swiss.
Our resident draft expert at one time said Washington was a top 10 talent and would have taken him with our first pick.
They’ve shown that lil out to Washington enough now that it is time to have him fake that route then go down the seam….
Should be easy money.

Agree.
Has anyone on this board ever uttered these words? Woah pull back on the passes to the TE. You are using the TE too much Tomlin!
I’d try a stint where I’d literally go to him 5 times in a row.
Did you see the donkey TE on the Chargers last night? He was hit a couple times in consecutive passes.
My favorite photo this year was in the Broncos game ( I think), when Washington shifted out on a goalline play and the CB that went with him was 5'10. Someone said it was like watching a PeeWee football game with that kid that is so much bigger than everyone else.

One of the beat writers was saying in the last day or two that he is now 300 lbs. If you can scheme him onto a smaller player that is going to be a nice advantage. DBs and 300-pound men do not mix well.jebrick wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 11:42 amMy favorite photo this year was in the Broncos game ( I think), when Washington shifted out on a goalline play and the CB that went with him was 5'10. Or just scheme anyone. When have we ever seen a Steeler receiver with 5-10 yards of green grass all around. We see that with other teams constantlyLakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 3:43 pmAKA scheme him in anyone!stillthere wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 4:38 amOne of the beat writers was saying in the last day or two that he is now 300 lbs. I saw CA3 catch a 15-20 yard crosser just the other night and there was not another body within 15 yards of him.Rod & Wire Mill wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 10:40 pmOr just scheme anyone. Shhh! You are ruining the board myth. We all know the Steelers never scheme a player open!

Cause I honestly believe it to be true. Yes I saw the CA3 play. It was refreshing to see a guy so wide open. But are we really to believe we scheme guys wide open often?
I don’t see it. Perhaps the camera angles on tv aren’t capturing the guys who have been running free that Trubisky, Pickett and Fields have flat out missed.
But I am of the opinion guys running free is for the most part a myth.
I’m open to being wrong

It is not a board myth. I have been begging for it. I also hope when Wilson, Roman gets at hat again that they scheme his ass open for a big shot play and loosen the D even more. Make the other team think about our weapons more than we worry about them.Jizz Mop wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2024 2:48 pmIs it really a board myth?daikyu wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2024 2:23 pmShhh! Chip and release, 5-8 yards turn and catch. ILB or S will have to run thru his back to brake up a pass.
And at 6'-7" 300 - get him some tosses in the Endzone.

Still think he could be used more in the middle of the field.Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts inadvertently revealed that Darnell Washington may weigh over 300 pounds, surpassing his listed weight of 264. Roberts praised Washington's physicality and athleticism during a media session, suggesting he’s a significant asset in both blocking and receiving roles. Washington, standing at 6-7, has recently shown increased involvement in the offense, including a career-long 29-yard catch against the New York Giants. His ability to hurdle defenders and score in the red zone emphasizes his versatility and potential impact for the Steelers this season.
By the Numbers
Darnell Washington is listed at 6-7 and 264 pounds, but insiders suggest he exceeds 300 pounds.
He has 11 receptions for 120 yards in the current season, with 5 receptions and 65 yards in the last two weeks.
Yes, But
While Washington has impressed as a tight end, speculation regarding his weight has raised the possibility of a position change to offensive tackle. However, his performance as a receiving option may solidify his role at tight end.
State of Play
Washington scored his first touchdown of the season in Week 2 and has become notable in the red zone.
He is capitalizing on increased offensive opportunities with quarterback Russell Wilson leading the team.
What's Next
As the season progresses, it's likely the Steelers will continue to feature Washington more prominently in their offensive schemes, especially with his demonstrated ability to make plays in space.
Bottom Line
Darnell Washington's impressive size and athleticism make him a unique threat for the Steelers, reinforcing the necessity to fully utilize his skills as both a blocker and a receiver in their offensive strategy.

Agreed. I get throwing to him on the boundary in the EZ, but he should be killing it in the MOF. The windows will be wider bc of his frame.Stosh-67 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 2:05 pmhttps://steelersdepot.com/2024/10/uh-oh ... us-pounds/

But I get that Russ doesn't like throwing there and Tomlin doesn't either...
Can’t wait till we don’t purposely limit ourselves on offense by avoiding things every other team does frequently. But I get that Russ doesn't like throwing there and Tomlin doesn't either...
Kind of like how we didn’t run a QB sneak for multiple seasons.
Run The Outlier down MOF 10 yards
Sharp button hook (sorry for ol skool reference)

Save for a defender in front of him, no one is getting through him to knock it down
He’s just too big
