Only a matter of time before you’ll have to pay to watch every game

Seems like the league is hell bent on alienating the fan base over its quest for every dollar. Couple this attitude along with style of product and play doesn't bode well for the future. If the game is televised on the networks I subscribe to great, I'll be watching. If not I'll just listen on the radio stream.

Unfortunately, they don't really care if they lose a certain small % of loyal US fans, because they know they'll be replaced by international fan growth and then some.

Charging more for an ever shittier product. It's a brilliant business model.

If it weren't for gambling, fantasy football, and nostalgia keeping people linked to their teams.

In fifteen years, it's going to be flag football.

Younger people have different viewing habits than us old guys. they want to see things on demand, at a time of their choosing. The league is keeping up with modern viewing demographics. I don't think they care if we like it or not.

I've watched almost every Steeler game for my entire life. 62 years worth now. Not all of them live. My year in Korea, I had to wait for the recorded VHS tape to arrive in the mail from home, for the games I didn't get catch on the Armed Forces Network. I missed a few games back then while deployed, to places game broadcasts, in any fashion, were not possible. Maybe missed 10 games in my life since about 10 years old, so actually about 52 years then.

The recent years streamed games, I've watched at the local fan clubs sports bar. But, this year could be the first missed game while on US soil for me, if the KC game is streamed on Netflix Christmas Day. Sports bar closed Xmas day & even if not, I wouldn't leave the family gathering for it. If the NFL does that to me/us, then FUCK THEM.

I'll still watch the Steelers after that when they're on regular TV or at the bar. But I won't spend another dime on the NFL afterward. No jerseys, memorabilia, tickets, no streaming svcs, parking, overpriced warm beers, etc. Not a penny. That will be the last draw. And I'll encourage everyone that will listen, to do the same. Fuck them if they do that to me/us.

I made a post about this a while ago, but I don't mind writing another one.

It's funny how all this has gone full circle.

People "cut the cord" away from cable because it got too expensive, and streaming services offered a way consume content at a cheaper price point.

But then streaming services got more and more expensive, and their content more and more exclusive. Now we're at a a point where if you pay for all the services it'd take to get the content you want, you might as well just cable again.

I said this before, and I'll say it again, the next evolution is to standardize a content delivery platform that everyone can subscribe to, and have all the current content providers have their content hosted in the same place and allow users to have a true "a la carte" model.

Content providers don't have to pay for their own streaming infrastructure (which is ridiculously expensive) and can focus that money on actual content (while paying a service fee for the company that is hosting, of course. But it'll still be lower than hosting it themselves).

The consumer experience will be infinitely better because we won't have to jump back and forth between platforms, and can truly pay for what we want.

Only downside is having one company hosting everyone could theoretically inflate the subscription cost of that platform. But cable companies are already doing that, so I don't see it as a step back.

Well, as I said, fuck them then:

https://www.nfl.com/news/netflix-will-b ... istmas-day

I'll do what I have too, to watch the Steelers after this. But, if I have to miss this game, I will never give another dime to the NFL outside of watching the Steelers.

You guys are looking at this all wrong… most people who are not in the home market are streaming games anyway. My life has been like that for 10 or 15 years now. From my standpoint, the more games that are available streaming the less I have to pirate.

That should be a wake up call for those of you who are using cable to ditch it, and walk away forever. It’s a scam.

I feel like the teacher’s voice on Charlie Brown trying to explain to my kids just how much TV has changed since I was a kid.
They really don’t give a rip.
Spoiled brats.

They can’t relate to laying on the living room floor, staring into the square ‘27 screen inside a wooden box with a giant fern plant on top watching Bugs Bunny the only day of the week it was on, Saturday morning.

Words can’t describe the annoyance of having to army crawl over to the TV in the wooden box to manually adjust the volume or physically change to one of what 10 channels?

Cable was a fantastic invention.

More Channels.

Clearer picture.

AND

A REMOTE CONTROL!

But if you had a little league game or a birthday party over at McKnight Lanes, you were soooo not watching the noon Ohio St/scUM game or Pitt/WVU backyard brawl.

Baseball practice?

Sorry kid.

Enjoy missing the first 3 innings of Pops, The Cobra, and the Pirates game.

Be there or be square.

You were SOL with DVR non existent.

VCR’s were kinda crude, but a damn good invention at the time.

I numbered each tape then created a corresponding notecard with detailed tape information for each football game I recorded then put it in a rolodex (google it)

My dad stealing HBO with that squiggly wire screwed in behind the wooden box was fun times too. More tapes and notecards for my extensive rolodex of recordings.

TV keeps evolving

After arriving here in Suwanee, GA back in 2002, I felt all kinds of grown up after furnishing my brand new townhome with my grossly overpriced ’52 Mitsubishi projection TV

WITH

DIRECTV

Fantastic service.

After watching Steelers’ games over at Suwanee88’s Steelers mancave or a local restaurant (no “Bars” in suburbs of Atlanta). I finally sprung for my very own DIRECTV Sunday Ticket package.

Pure goodness and worth every, damn, penny.

Every channel, every game, I wanted WITH DVR!

(Side note: Siciliano and Directv had the Red Zone Channel down to a science. YOU SUCK SCOTT HANSON! I WILL NOT subscribe to the Red Zone Channel EVER again!)

Today?

My kids laugh at my book of DVDs and antiquated DVD player.

I loathed ditching my beloved DIRECTV for streaming.

Two kids and the insane cost of youth sports made it a necessity.

However,

I’d gladly pay the difference for someone, somewhere in the world, to figure out how to put all these streaming services on one platform, send me ONE freaking bill, no matter how big, just PUT EVERYTHING IN ONE GODDAMN PLACE!

So frustrating

Just to watch my transplant hometown Braves, I had to ditch my $72 per month YoutubeTV and pay $94 per month for crappy ass FUBO and even more crappy ass Balley’s sports.

Then when football season starts, I’ll be adding back YoutubeTV just to get the Sunday ticket back.

To the point of the OP…
…when does it stop???

Not just the NFL but TV in general.

My buddy recommended a show called “Sugar?”

Ok I’ll give it a watch

But now I have to subscribe to AppleTV???

Again?

I ditched that after Ted Lasso and Shrinking was done.

WTF?!?!

Still have Netflix, Max, Amazon, Disney Plus autodeducted on top of stupid FUBO

PLUS INTERNET

Again,

SOMEBODY PLEASE PUT ALL THIS CONTENT ON ONE PLATFORM WITH ONE BILL!

Where were you stationed. I spent 1986 in Wonju (Army) about 60 miles from Seoul. I to remember getting VHS tapes from home as well :D

Have you guys heard of IPTV. I have a IPTV box (paid $300) and I watched all the Steelers games last year with no issues.

I got Apple TV year ago or so on my ps4 because wife and I wanted to watch Ted Lasso. Been too lazy to cancel it. Hardly ever watch anything else on it. Watched a few things here and there but nothing else really.

Living in Eastern Panhandle of WV, I am an Orioles fan. Last year they had a game on Apple TV and I was like oh yea. I still have that thing. So I watched it.

Last Friday I saw Orioles had a game on Apple TV instead of normal regional sports channel MASN. So like last year I go to watch it on Apple TV

Nope. Had to have "Apple TV Plus" in order to watch it.

According to the Guardian, to watch every NFL game this year, it will cost $1600

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/artic ... ames-price

Ouch.

It’s a good thing I don’t care like I used to. No way I will watch Christmas Day. As the product becomes more and more watered down, I’ll save more and more time and money.

I'll keep pirating, tho, instead of paying to stream, even with the attendant hiccups. The product is not worth the price for me.

Cord cutting has been amazing.

Most have not really cord cut.

Get rid of it all and only build back with quality!

Remember Days of Our Lives? I watched that as a teen and then went to college came back after not watching for 6 months watched one show and was caught up!

News has turned into a soap opera! Cancel it all or tune in once a week and you are all caught up and have missed nothing. Could probably go 14 days!

Read the news….much less aggravating and better quality!

Then once you have gotten rid of all your services just add them back when you need them and cancel the same day and enjoy the month paid or free!

So much garbage out there. Who are you paying for you or your kids?

$1600 bucks for every NfL game is BS. VPN plus $25 a month while the NFL is on is all it takes.

Free HBO with ATT, free AppleTV+ with hardware purchase. A little family plan for mom and sis to benefit. A shared account or two for trades and it is immensely better than paying for all the garbage; USA, MTV 1 thru 28, QVC, all the Spanish channels, religious shit, and on and on!

Cord cutting has been a dream!

Almost forgot…YouTube! If on the iPhone ditch the App, use Safari and buy Vinegar….ad free and streams in any quality to your TV or on your phone!

Yeah basically watched that show for Hope and then Santa Barbara to watch Robin Wright….those two were smokin hot!

And the Friday cliffhangers! But all in, it was some really bad TV! So much bad TV! Lot of good TV though too, just not nearly as much as the bad!

Absurd bullshit.

So many streaming services is as dumb as putting more games internationally. Problem is the money grubbing shit callers can’t and won’t stop until they’ve milked every fucking dollar they can out of viewers pockets or they kill the game. Personally I think once its flag football the game may actually die.

Heard today there was a study done on what it would cost a fan to buy all streaming services etc to watch all the games. The total cost was 1600.00 dollars.

Ridiculous.

I believe comcast is going to offer a streaming bundle along with their cable package, Apple TV, Netflix and peacock….

I think we’ll start to see more and more bundling as we go forward because people are sick and tired of having 20 different stream sites and costs.

Really aren’t saving money when you have just a handful of streaming services like it once was when there were limited streaming services available.
