So who's everybody's surprise cut?
Just 1.
I'll go with Mason Rudolph. He didn't do enough to sew up a roster spot and there is too much talent at other spots (like o-line) the Steelers will want to keep.
Also, Mason will always be a phone call away if the Steelers need him. He had the entire offseason to sign with another team but likely didn't get any offers.
The Steelers also could add a young QB who gets cut that they might like from another team to the practice squad instead of keeping Mason.

Isn’t there a “new” rule in place that allows a 3rd emergency QB to dress on game day? If so, I don’t think they’ll cut Rudolph. The devil you know…
As for a surprise cut, wow, that’s a tough one. Personally, I would cut Dotson after failing to trade him, but with just about every guard on the roster dealing with an injury, including Dotson himself, that’s a tough call right now.
For lack of a better option, I’m going with Mark Robinson. He’ll land on the practice squad.

Just by the vibes I got from preseason, I get a strange feeling that Cool Shades is done with Mason. They’ll cut his ass, pick up a youngster to develop or a retread like Josh Dobbs to be the 3rd QB that never plays……and remember, Mason wasn’t signed or offered by anyone else the entire offseason. He WILL be sitting by his phone if the Steelers need him. I see no difference between Mason and Trubisky, except mobility but Mitch doesn’t use his mobility in games that count. We’re fucked if either Mason or Mitch have to play several games.Jobu wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 6:32 pmIsn’t there a “new” rule in place that allows a 3rd emergency QB to dress on game day? I think they cut Rudolph.
No way they cut Mark Robinson. Still very young and has major upside. Dotson I 100% agree will be released if they can’t trade him.

Shouldn’t be a surprise but the first to go should be Kendrick Green.

They won't roll without 3 QB's (I guess 1 now gets to dress but will only play in an emergency).SteelerDayTrader wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 7:23 pmI doubt they cut Rudolph

I think they'll either look for a young guy that gets cut that could develop, or they'll opt for another retread.
Mason was not offered a contract by any teams this offseason. The Steelers know this.
He probably won't play a single snap this entire season. I don't think Rudolph took a snap last year.
What would there be to lose by cutting him and signing a young guy to be the #3? There will be some surprising cuts in the next few days.
You may be 100% right and they keep Rudolph, but I just don't see the point.

Connor Heyward's versatility might make AntMac the odd man out.
Guys like Bell and X Man did basically nothing during the preseason but AntMac being cut would not shock me.
Heyward can wear a lot of hats and Tomlin loves that, and things of that nature.

Tomlin has always had 3 QB's, except maybe one year.
Also, I thought I heard the new rule was you could carry 3 QB's, but all have to dress. Meaning carrying a 3rd QB costs you dressing a special teamer or someone else.
Mason would probably be just fine on the PS. Although, he's not worse than 96 other QB's in the league, so as soon as a guy goes down someone would probably grab Mason off the PS.
If someone does get injured, maybe they hope to trade Mason or Trubisky.

I think AntMac sticks but he doesn’t get a hat on game days. That way, Hayward is the emergency RB3 for a one game situation but AntMac can slot when needed to backup in case of longer injury. You don’t really need him on KO given the new rules and he doesn’t play teams otherwise.

I’ll call my shot with Gentry.
Could also be Pierre but I think they would be after cuts if a better option presents.

Gentry should be cut. Better use of the roster spot for line (either side).Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 9:43 pmI’ll call my shot with Gentry.

Not really as huge a surprise for anyone watching the last pre-season game where he was obliterated by a 3rd tier QB most of that QB’s series where I counted getting tooled 3 times in a row in a matter of couple minutes…. James Pierre

Luq Barcoo is better option than Pierre, heck I would even venture to throw Hill and Wilcox in this discussion.Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 9:43 pmI’ll call my shot with Gentry.

Perhaps even some other franchise cuts someone with better upside. Pierre is not a worthy investment and has shown little [if any] return on time in a Steeler uniform.

I haven't done the math, but I suppose Heyward could take the 3-4 touches a 3rd back would need. Seems like they'd be able to dress 3 backs, plus Heyward.Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 9:42 pmI think AntMac sticks but he doesn’t get a hat on game days.
But if we do our usual "deliberate" pace, that's roughly 60 snaps a game. And I think they're going to want to run the ball 30-35 times per game. That would be a hell of a workload for just 2 backs. Again, have to crunch the numbers once you factor in a couple QB scrambles, and the obligatory jet sweeps.
I like Heyward, but I'm not sure he's the guy to take those 3-4 touches for the 3rd back.

From what I have heard via DK Sports Pittsburgh - McFarland is part of the plans for this season.
Heyward being the 4th RB as well other things may allow for a player or 2 extra to make the roster that might not otherwise. They may keep 4 TEs + Conner H. If not Rodney Williams probably goes to the practice squad. If the team is going to be running a lot of 12 and 13 personnel packages they will need the body for practice and game reps.

When Ben was young they kept 2 vets around to help him develop what would make the team deviate from that plan this time? Would you rather have Drew Lock or Mason Rudolph? I will stick with Mason & so will the Pittsburgh front office.stairway 2 seven wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 10:34 pmPierre or Gentry. They should cut Rudolph but they won't.

Some CB names already out there….
Darren Evans
Dane Cruikshank
Darius Phillips
Colby Richardson
Rejzohn Wright
Montreal Braswell
Chris Jackson
Greedy Williams
Bless Austin
More to be expected as teams thin the herd from 90 to 53.

Players I would cut if some other players become available (as an example, just from DEN)....
Gentry for....Albert Okwuegbunam (DEN)
Pierre for....Essang Bassey (DEN)
Green for....P.J. Mustipher (DEN) or one of their tackling dummies.

Put me down for Jim Pierre, although it shouldn't be a surprise as bad as he's been.
In their current state, I hate everything about this organization.

Tanner Muse apparently. Smart when you think about it. Cut a Special Teams only ace, leave a spot for a position potential bubble player with a ceiling. Sign Muse to PS. Bring him up when injuries create a roster spot.

Yep. Now that potential 6th WR, 7th DL or 11th DB would make more sense.Steelersfan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 4:03 pmTanner Muse apparently. Smart when you think about it. Rumor out of Seattle is old friend Devin Bush might be traded or cut, despite 2.99 million guaranteed owed him regardless of outcome.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...
