Any gas to the oddly persistent Chase Young rumors?

Post by Ice » Tue Jun 13, 2023 3:19 pm

As a Buckeye fan, I'm interested... are we saying something to Highsmith? Or is it more NFL silly season talk? He's originally from Maryland, if that's close enough to Virginia Beach to matter.

I wonder if they want him to gain weight and be the next Cam Heyward.

I want no part of him UNLESS it's dirt, dirt cheap (both in $s and draft capital costs).

After watching him, my eyes tell me he's a "me" player -- looking to cash in without really doing the work. I don't think he'll ever be a very good ROI type guy, as I don't think he loves football as much as he loves being highly paid for being famous. (He may put in limited effort in order to get that next big, long-term payday with G$$$s, but then he'll quickly fade, imo)

No thanks. To me, he's not worth the risk.

Of course, Tomlin loves him!

Every article I could find traces back to a guy named Jeff Hartman at behindthesteelcurtain.com citing "sources within the organization".

I guess it comes down to whether you think a dude writing as a freelancer for sbnation has the inside scoop with the Steelers front office.

Not clear to me what it means for us to be ‘in’ on Young. Why would we trade for an Edge with one year left on his deal when our current Edge is good andd has one year left on his deal?

If it means we are considering going after him in the 2024 offseason if the Highsmith talks break down, okay. But anyone thinking we are considering trading a premium pick for Young right now, so we can have 3 premier Edges for 2023 and only 1 for 2024, and losing a pick that would have been needed to bring in a new Edge…that’s nuts.

The reports are flying, and the rumors are stirring. Right now, the conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers acquiring Chase Young has never been hotter.

But is it true?

Are the Steelers really in on the former second-overall pick? Can they even make it happen? And what comes with the acquisition of another star-in-the-making defender?

Reports claim the team is doing their homework on a trade. Right now, Chase Young to the Steelers is ramping up. So, it's time to talk about it.

Played in only 12 games over the last two years disrupted by his ACL tear.

What do you give up?

In the current NFL the window for championship teams appears to be the years that a QB is on his/her rookie deal. We may be thinking that the Steelers are on year 2-3 of a rebuild. The FO may be thinking we have 2-3 years to win a Lombardi. Maybe both are true.

In any case, I wouldn't be surprised to see more aggressive than expected moves over the next 12-18 months.

This one in particular would be weird for the reasons stated above . . .

If he's basically a one year rental, then I wouldn't give up much more than I could get back in a comp pick. IF he lands a big C2 elsewhere, then we would be in line for '24 3rd round comp pick. I might give up a 2nd or 3rd if I was 90% sure I was going to get a 3rd back a year later.

Still, he's got an $11M fully G$'d cap hit this year. The only way it makes sense to trade for him is if you're going to sign him to a new contract extension. And how much $$$ do you throw at a guy that another team doesn't want to keep/pay? You know he's going to want to get PAID!

While it may seem like a Minkah situation, I don't think it is...because Chase is a MUCH MUCH riskier investment. I think it would be more like Minkah! Part Deux (an unnecessary, and overly bad sequel to the classic trade we made when we landed him).

Just my take anyway.

Edit: NOW, if somehow Mont. Adams, Kevin Dotson, and K. Green were the trade compensation, I would certainly be more interested! :D

Speculation is the injury history could significantly lower the opportunity cost. If it really does come down to a 3rd-ish, it does get more interesting. The Redskins culture is so toxic, I feel like it's hard to judge players from there.

I'll agree I think the Steelers are trying to assemble the strongest roster they can, right now, and investing in OL and multiple pass rush options was quite successful across the state last season.

As an OSU fan, I watched Young a lot in college. If he can get/stay healthy, I think he’s an all pro beast for years to come.
That said, the only way this makes sense from the Steelers point of view is if they have come to the conclusion that they can’t re-sign Alex Highsmith. I don’t think it’s gotten to that point, at least not yet. I’m chalking this up to off-season clickbait and filler. (But what the hell do I know?)

I think this all hot Air at this point unless the steelers are shipping a 4th or later round pick

He is the hometown kid more-so than even Dwayne Haskins who played HS ball with Dan Snyder's son. Chase is from about 2 miles from where I live in DC but I believe in actual Maryland but inside the beltway.

I wouldn't say no for the right deal, whatever that is. But I'm not trading premium picks.

I don't know much about the guy other than a cursory knowledge, but suffice it to say Cam Heyward is long in the tooth - to put it mildly. He says he has another 3-4 years left.

I doubt that. But that's what all players say. Hell, brady probably still thinks he can come back and win a SB.

What's the deal with Leal and Loudermilk?

heyward is basically a DT, Young is an Edge. Loudermilk isn’t good, but plays IDL. They aren’t really sure what Leal is; maybe a subpackage guy now, but probably has better odds of being a depth Edge than base IDL over the rest of his rookie contract.
