Steelers trade for Allen Robinson

Post by Steeldrama » Tue Apr 18, 2023 5:19 pm

Steelers acquired WR Allen Robinson from the Rams.
Compensation hasn't yet been given, but because the smoke of the Robinson situation has included the Rams leaking that they'd pick up salary to move Robinson, it likely isn't much. Robinson fits in as the third wideout next to George Pickens and Diontae Johnson, with Johnson likely the favorite to run most of the slot routes in the offense. Robinson will remain only a deep-league dart throw in as a lower rung receiver on an offense that struggled for most of last season. The Steelers are likely hoping they're able to squeeze some red zone production out of him after they floundered there last season.

From Scheffter
WR Allen Robinson is due $15 million guaranteed this season, of which the Rams already have paid $5 million. It is expected that the Steelers will pay a portion of the remaining $10 million to Robinson, per sources

My favorite PSU WR ever. Hasn’t had a good NFL season since 2020. Lots of miles and injures on him, plus he’s due $10 million. What did we trade for him and how much of the salary are we paying? That’s the real question here. Plus, is he the slot or backup on the outside? Very strange trade. When healthy he is very skilled as a slot WR.

Unless we give up a 2nd rounder, this takes a steaming dump on the Ravens’ OBJ deal.

Hope the price wasn't too high, and they have to be looking at him as potential top 3 (or 4?) WR material, since he probably isn't going to be a gunner or KR on STs, which is usually pretty key to a Steeler WR after the top few getting a hat on Sundays. It's an odd move indeed, considering what they already have.

Good insurance/option, I suppose. He can push that knucklehead DJ, or at worst compete with Austin III to be the 3rd receiver.

So I think they've head to camp with 4 guys they like, and probably add the usual mid-round rookie to the mix.

While Robinson was atrocious these past few years (after he got paid), I'm hoping the Rams are eating most of his G$ (to rebuild next year) and we only gave up a '23 7th for him or a '24 mid-late rounder. From what my eyes saw, it looked like he basically quit on his teams (CHI '21 & LAR '22) the last two years.

I hope they know what they're doing here, because in games he looked like a player that got paid and sort of just gave up -- not Kenny Golladay or Michael Thomas 'give up' bad, but kind of like them.

I'll add: this and a few other recent additions looks a lot like they're setting up to trade up in the 1st and accept having fewer '23 draft picks (and instead, filling those roster holes now with FAs).

That article was over 3 years ago. As mentioned by someone else, it appears he's basically quiet quit these past couple years.

Big salary dump for the Rams, I bet you the Steelers didn't trade anything more than a 5th.

I actually like this a lot.
In their current state, I hate everything about this organization.

This is an odd signing, imo

Why would you pay someone that amount of money, who has shown to not be able to stay healthy and when healthy has had limited production??

Maybe it's a safety net, in case Austin doesn't pan out, or maybe they are hoping he can replace DJ? But if you cut DJ, you still need another veteran, imo.

Definitely a head scratcher

If they gave up anything more than a sack of deflated footballs for this bum, it’s an awful move. There are under JAGs on the practice squad that are better gambles.
What the fuck?

He was one of the better WRs in the league when he was healthy. Should probably wait to hear the total compensation and salary before jumping off a ledge.

I would prefer a WR in the draft...now if it were a corner, that's a different story. We can't seem to get that right of late in the drafts....

He might have been legit injured last year but he was generally ass in LA. Rams were super hopeful though with Stafford dropping dimes. I’d too like to know how much we are paying him and what we gave up.

This move also seems like a confirmation that Mitch 'the Titty Kisser' is here to stay -- as of now, our WR3 and WR5/6 had very good success with him throwing them the pigskin in CHI.

Meh, to each their own

I personally love the Artie Burns, Senquez Golson and Justin Layne selections (just to name a few)

Tomlin being the secondary guru he is has really done a nice job w drafting and developing corners and safeties

That's hilarious.

Perhaps even more hilarious is Mason Rudolph is still on the market. Maybe he wants nothing to do with PIT, but he might also be finding there's not much of a market for him as a backup QB, either.

The only real reason for PIT to keep Trubisky is they believe in honoring their contracts. That's not a horrible way to do business, except it's never saved them any money. I suppose the flip side is they think it makes it easier to attract FAs, but do you want those guys if they go elsewhere because they're worried about getting cut and not getting the full deal?

This sounds like a good gamble.

He had the damn franchise tag placed on him in 2021 then was injured last year. He has some juice left, hopefully!

We needed a veteran to show this rudderless young WR Corp how to be professionals. Still averaging 10 yards per reception. He average 12 yards per catch in the playoffs.

Injuries- torn Achilles for the Jags and stress fracture last year that required a screw in his foot.

Plus it will bolster the PSU welcome wagon for Porter Jr.

I’d lean towards his QB situation sucked more than he quit. Time will tell. For 5 mil and swapping R7 picks, I still love this.

Trade terms agreement: 🏈Steelers get WR Allen Robinson and a 7th-round pick (No. 251). 🏈Rams receive 7th-round pick (No. 234). Rams pay $10.25 million of Robinson’s salary; Steelers pay remaining $5 million. Robinson is scheduled to be in Pittsburgh for a physical Wednesday.

UPDATE: Steelers acquired WR Allen Robinson and a seventh-round pick from the Rams for a seventh-round pick.
The Rams will pay $10.25 million of Robinson's $15.25 million salary and bump up 17 spots in the draft, from 251 to 234.

So.....$5M and we slide back 17 spots in the 7th round. I can live with that IF he comes to play. He has talent and very good hands. I just hope he's healthy AND wants to play.

I'll add: I did see him give some effort last year, but he seemed to let his frustrations get the best of him and he gave up some, too -- sort of. Like I said, he has talent and very good hands plucking the ball out of the air.

So take this from a SoCal guy who had Robinson on his fantasy team last year (obviously I should both like him as a potential fit and hate him right now for how bad his production was last season) so I watched him regularly and focused on him during games. Dude can still play. He was getting open a lot during the beginning of the season and Stafford wouldn’t even look his way. Just stare down and force it to Kupp. It was excruciating and a waste of legit talent.

That said, given the recent lack of productivity and injury concerns I wouldn’t pay much of Robinson’s salary or give up more than a late rounder for him. But IMHO this is a higher upside signing than most people think. I like it at the right price.

EDIT: After reviewing the compensation, I love this pickup. Low risk, high (potentially) reward.
