Not sure he had much of a chance if i remember correctly. In any case the Chargers "almost" ran out of time. Never felt that the Raiders had any risk of running out of clock.

The lesson should be clear by now. Always assume that elite QB's will score given 4 downs. Coach as if last possession wins.

On another note FC's take on how this Steelers team is not a real Steelers team really resonated with me. The post Smith-Farrior-Troy-Clark-Ward Steelers are definitely the new coke of Steelers teams. Way off brand. A little too sweet. And way out of touch with the people who love them.

You can't control success. But you can control effort, attitude, and attention to detail. This is a failed enterprise, even if it happens to succeed.

It's time for a change.

The best arguments I’ve made for replacing Tomlin and or Colbert: Tomlin has been in the NFL so long and the game has changed so much. For Colbert it’s failure to accumulate defensive talent at any cost while you have a SB win capable QB. Basically I think he only way either gets replaced is if one or both resigns of their own volition.

Maybe...but a slightly different situation...he probably thought the Chargers would play for the tie. Ballsy move to play to win.

And I’ll have to watch the last series to see...were there times the Chargers were deliberately bleeding the clock like the Raiders were last Sunday?

Going for two there increased their win chances by 11 percent, so it wasn't that ballsy.

Also, if they had gone for two when they scored to make it an 8-point lead, they would have increased their chances by another percent and a half. (The thinking being you make it and it's just a kick PAT for the win OR you miss and you get a second crack at a 2 pt PAT to tie.)

kinda reminds me of Belichick going for it on 4th and two against the Colts; iirc, it was, statistically speaking, the right call to make, but was seen as foolhardy because it's not the type of decision NFL coaches are often willing to make, given that most are more concerned with covering their ass than they are with putting their team in the best position to win

living in their fears, so to speak

(and of course, it's only foolhardy if it doesn't work; it's 'ballsy' if it does)
