Specious roughing the passer penalties may cause QB injuries

Post by Alibe » Mon Oct 08, 2018 2:10 pm

Why bother holding up on the pass rush to avoid a penalty? Just lay the wood! If you are going to be penalized for grazing an ankle, you might as well go full speed at the QB and take the penalty for a truly big hit! This seems to be the message the officials are sending.

I am in favor of getting a pound of flesh at this point. Just a couple times a game you may as well just unload on the QB and take the 15 you are probably gonna get anyway. If you think they may throw the flag and are trying to think how to let up you may as well turn that off and knock his dick into the dirt.

Then they'll eject the player who does that. Normal hits are now penalties, and what used to be penalties are now automatic ejections.

That is what Dan McCullers is for.

I’d be ready for them to bring out the flags, but honestly the Watt roughing had less contact than your average flag grab, so I’m not sure even that would buy us anything.

Alex Smith took some brutal shots last night.
A few really hard shots, but while he still had ball in hand.
They bit their tongue and held their flags back.

Surprised, since hitting the QB hard has become illegal.

i don't think there's anything wrong with the spirit of the rule, as such
it doesn't have to be "take their heads off!" vs. "put a dress on them"
it's just that the point of emphasis is all wrong, and being enforced inconsistently

it shouldn't be too hard to deduce whether a defender is driving the QB into the ground or otherwise giving something 'extra', and in those situations i have no problem with throwing the flag
the problem comes with the body weight rule, which is ridiculous on its face, and overzealous officials continuing to flag clean hits and near hits (the Watt play)

i'm hoping for a catch rule-like relaxation on some of these provisions at some point, but like with that rule it'll probably take a good 5 years of consistent complaining before the NFL does the sensible thing

The "low hit" is worse. It's supposed to protect QBs from "forcible hits" in "the knee area or below". It's routinely called for any hit below the waist, including hitting a QB with an arm or hand on a fly-by. The one vs Michael Bennett this week was not even a hit. He wrapped the QB's feet while lying on the ground.
