My lone commentary on this. I like the hire, the McCarthy resume and the proven capabilities. I recognize the following is meaningless but I like the yinzer story too. I've said this before but I think it's silly that Steelers are being criticized for NOT doing the same shit that they did 20 and then 45 years ago
As far as Rodgers, I think it's smart to bring him back for one more year, work with Howard who's not taken a snap, even pre-season, see if that's going to work
I've been saying for years that it isn't the holes everyone knows you need to fill and address but it's really about the obstacle starters who keep you from getting better.
In other words, Patrick Queen is a bigger obstacles to becoming great than is WR2. Yes, of course we know they need a WR, but if they really want to get better, they need to upgrade the guys who aren't terrible but who also aren't great... and who are standing in the way of younger talent that may or may not be an improvement. Broderick Jones, Chuck Clark, Slay, Malik Harrison, Mason Rudolph... these are good guys to have when surrounded by star players but they are a problem if you are depending on them to be great or great when called upon. For a team that's not a legit Super Bowl contender, just get rid of these guys ASAP. I would pretty much include TJ Watt in this, if his contract weren't such an albatross that you can't get enough in return. They will likely end up losing Herbig simply because they paid Watt & Highsmith. Herbig mgith not have the career that Watt has had, but considering he is ascendant and Watt appears to be in decline, trading Watt might serve the team better in the long run. (But we all know the franchise doesn't operate on what's best for the team, they are chasing some mythical Steeler Way (that they don't even understand).
