Re: Tomlin Extended
here's the thing: you act like an ass and quit on the team, you get gone (Deebo, AB, Bell, Martavis)
you be a good soldier, give a shit about the team, you get rewarded (Heyward, Pouncey, Ben, Tomlin, soon to be Decastro & Haden)
Isn't this the culture we want? For all we know, Tomlin said three years ago: "trade AB, he's counterproductive and someday he'll snap and we'll be left holding the bag" and was told "we can't do that, so try and keep him happy for as long as you can and we won't hold it against you when he goes apeshit".
In retrospect, I think Tomlin did a decent job of keeping Deebo, AB, Porter, Haley, Martavis, Bell at bay-- got a lot of productivity out of them considering their myriad issues. Was it perfect? No. Did it truly undermine their chances of winning? Maybe the Jacksonville playoff and the Chicago national anthem game. But otherwise, I think he surfed the wave of this organization's personalities and talent fairly well.
That said: it's a prove it year for Ben, Tomlin, JuJu, Butler, Boswell, Danny Smith, Artie Burns, Sean Davis. Tuitt, Edmunds, Grimble. No more distractions, no more lack of cohesion in and out of the locker room. Fewer "me" guys more interested in attention than winning. I'm excited to see the results.

Good move.
A total off-the-cuff reaction to this comment is that it would seem to run against the narrative that Rooney totally neutered Ben after the "troubles." Ben having that kind of organizational pull and Rooney putting Ben in his place seems in tension to me.Donnie Brasco wrote:

Yeah, that seat would seem finally to be heating up.
Things have changed. 2010 is a loooooooooooong time ago. Maybe they realized they saddled him with Todd Haley and ruined a good portion of his career?
He saddled himself with Haley. Just quit.

And what the hell does Roethlisberger have to prove?

By basically doing nothing and letting them do whatever the hell they wanted. Yeah, that's a rare and valuable skillset. Not sure we can find another coach that has it.
LOL. You praise Tomlin's hands-off laissez-faire approach to managing egos, and then when some of those players turn out to be big babies in need of adult supervision you praise Tomlin for not doing something to cause them to flip-out sooner.
You literally are incapable of criticizing the guy. Every time you try, you end-up showering him with praise. You actually found a way to praise Tomlin for doing nothing to address a problem. Mind-boggling.

Dude...this is a "prove it" extension.
It's Rooney's shot across Tomlin's bow.
A very weak one.
Shot across the bow would be no extension this offseason.
Dude had two full seasons still under contract. Oh noes, we can’t possibly have a coach actually coach under the very adverse condition of having only two years left on his contract.
A one year extension after next season would have made more sense.
Rooney needs to grow a pair and stop rewarding mediocrity.

Dude, I'm beginning to think you're stalking me. You respond to just about everyone of my posts usually doing that hall monitor thing. The funny thing is, your brother seems to be doing it, too, in the Pirates Corsair group on Facebook.
I would have fired Tomlin a long time ago, but hey lucky for him I'm not EMR.

Huh? Last season Tomlin made so so so many boneheaded decisions in game and somehow, even out of game decisions, like his ridiculous reason(s) for leaving Ben on the sidelines during that fucking Raiders debacle that he’s lucky Ben is late in his career....I agree to those who said that bringing in a new hire would mess things up and maybe change Ben’s retirement plans. I actually thought 2018 may have been MT worst coaching season to date. I mean he literally cost that team multiple games. When his ass puckers up when the game is tight and late, he’s not outcoaching anyone. Let’s just hope this defense can win a few games for us.

I guess this means the ping/pong table is being put back?
The fact that Tomlin has cost this team game after game playing the dregs of the bottom feeder teams is enough to have caused him to be fired several seasons ago. This guy is a joke. Just crazy!
So, how are they/we supposed to tell if the new hires aren't the real reason Tomlin is looking good on game day? Teryl Austin, Eddie Faulkner and Shaun Scarrett [not new hire but new as the OLine coach without Munchak]. So if this 2019 team makes the postseason and isn't one a done does Tomlin get a longer extension?
Side Note: I honestly don't care how well or shitty the ST's unit does Smith is first to experience the Guillotine...

Interesting.Per source: Mike Tomlin actually had an option year in the contract previous to existing one that was triggered based on number of victories. His current contract, including the extension, does not include that type of incentive. https://twitter.com/gerrydulac/statuses ... 5659982848

Tomlin had already earned an option for 2021, so this 1-yr extension is entirely symbolic and feigned vote of confidence? Am I reading that right?

When I said "prove it" for some reason I thought Tomlin was on his last year- I didn't realize he was here through 2020.

If, in fact, he hired Haley - Dumb motherfucker.

In all of these posts nobody has brought up Colbert, I believe he is only under contract until 2020.
For those that think Rooney is just fine with the way things are, it seems obvious he is not. With Colbert he was given that Vice President title along with his General Manager duties back in what was it, 2016?? I can actually see Colbert remaining with the team as the Vice President but giving up his GM duties, giving him more time to spend with family and having less stress. He is what now, 63?? Considerably older than Tomlin. Perhaps they have Colbert step down to being the VP and Omar Khan becomes the GM.
Many might not like to hear it but Tomlin may very well be looking at gaining more control and say so if he has a new GM. Who knows?? Maybe the getting rid of Haley was Tomlin becoming more assertive, maybe the hiring of Karl Dunbar, Tom Bradley, Eddie Faulkner and Teryl Austin was pushed by Tomlin. Maybe finally, Tomlin has the say so and control and power that Cowher once had. But he has to show results and if he does, if the team wins the division and has a deep playoff run I can see Rooney fully buying into Tomlin as the coach for the post-Ben era.

Some of the usual suspects now surfacing, Cor-Ten...and I completely agree with '58.
We can debate Tomlin's handling of his superstars. What we CAN'T debate is that this guy is an absolute game-day dullard!!!
And...how the fuck is he "lame duck" if he goes into the season with two years on his contract??

Revisionist history with Deebo. The dude gave his heart and soul to the Steelers. Tomlin and the coaching staff dicked him around the first season he was back until they were forced to put him in action, and he delivered. Next season, did the same damn thing. They basically lied to the dude. Respect is a two-way street.
Also, keeping Porter at bay? The dude was thick as thieves with Porter.

And for anyone claiming Tomlin is asserting more control, or that the new hires signal Tomlin making strategic changes.......just remember Danny Fucking Smith still has a job.

Unlike their head coach, the Steelers are not going to extend the contract of general manager Kevin Colbert this year and will wait until after the season to do so — if they do so. https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/ste ... 1907260090

Colbert has said he is going on a year-to-year basis from here on out. He has the job until he doesn’t want it anymore.
