Throwing short of the sticks on 3rd down is what coaches want them to do instead of taking a sack. It’s the 3rd down equivalent of a punt.
Yep, because "3 things happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad". Take the free 7 yards and punt! That's how you NHALS....
And I see a lot of teams, every week, throwing short of the sticks, A LOT. The hope is to pick up the first with RAC. But PIT seems to do it more than anyone. Tomlin would rather play it safe than risk an interception or sack trying to throw beyond the sticks. That whole "we don't live in our fears" thing.
By the way, remember all the times Ben would go shotgun and empty set on 3rd and 2? Playing for the long hand-off in place of the run, because those teams couldn't convert 3rd and short running to save their lives.
And how many times did he throw deep rather than take the short route for the sure 1st down
That used to drive me nuts

I really get tired of hearing that. EVERY team in the league does it, especially teams with one of the best deep ball throwers in the league. Teams love to take a shot against man coverage there.
I don't even watch that many games and I still see teams doing that every week. Lots of teams are going to take a shot if you give them man with no safety help. They wait for it. It just so happens you'll most often see it on 3rd and short. Unless you're a short-yardage conversion machine like PHI or Brady and NE, you're going to take a shot on occasion.

It’s also a factor of shitty QB play. Shitty QBs can’t read, afraid to throw, leave the pocket, still can’t find a guy, panic, throw it away or dump it down.

Making the QB play shitty is a feature of the offense
