Kubiak to the Raiders
Do you think he would have taken the Steelers HC job, if actually offered (which we know it was not)?
I think it’s just money. Cards and raiders offering ~2X what steelers were willing to pay.

I doubt money has much to do with this
Tomlin was getting 25m reportedly
No one bright or innovative wants to be stuck in Pittsburgh with the Rooneys or the fans

Yes, they want to go to the Raiders, flame out and never be seen from again.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."
Getting a good young qb with the first overall pick is the obvious draw for a young offensive mind
1st overall pick, $100M cap space, solid D and some good skill guys on offense.
Raiders an understandable preference over arizona based on those (afc west is an easier division as well, albeit not by a big margin).
Kubiak also interviewed with Giants, Ravens, Falcons.
Only riskier in the sense that Rooney is apparently not as demanding as the other 31 owners.
While I don't think it was the salary, it does seem like Rooney was looking for someone that wanted to add to the current roster rather than blow things up. A young HC looking at those contracts to Watt and DK, who maybe doesn't like some of the young talent like JPJ....
You can definitely see a case where in interviews Deuce is like "this roster is good - you should be winning playoff games in a year, two max". Then instead of hiring a staff to then build the roster for what you want to do, you have to evaluate the roster without a staff and then find coaches that can work with what you have (because the owner said you had make do with the current roster).
riskier in the sense that when its fully Your Plan its fully your Ass
as opposed to accepting someone elses plan, hedging all your bets, re-defining success and building in blame (aka - the Steelers Way otherwise known as the Standard).
its a good landing spot for the likes of Big Mike
not so much for someone really keen to build and risk for ultimate success -- driven

I'd love to see one example of an owner hiring a coach to blow up their team and bring in all new systems, players etc. as part of some 5 year plan.
Kubiak likely said that a) the Raiders underperformed their talent and are close to competing b) he loves Mendoza c) he wants to build around Crosby, Bowers and Jeantty
And no, Kubiak didn't turn down the Steelers nor would he have if offered.

Zero way for you to know this unless you know him or have him quoted saying he would take the Steelers job if offered. And no, Kubiak didn't turn down the Steelers nor would he have if offered.
In Vegas he has brand new, state of the art facilities AND the number 1 pick in the draft where he will take Mendoza.
In Pitt he has low budget facilities, an owner that doesn’t believe in analytics, and a QB room with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and possibly Rogers.
Vegas >>>>> Pittsburgh for a new HC.

Generally YES teams hiring new coaches are in rebuild mode. I'd say MOST OF THE TIME when you are replacing a coach it's because the team is heading in the wrong direction, and setting a new direction doesn't mean picking up where the last guy left off.

Just not seeing how you can say he wouldn’t have turned down the job.
Pittsburgh isn’t looking as attractive as it once might have been.
Especially vs the alternative he had out in Vegas.

And so many pluses to live in Vegas (assuming you have no kids or are grown). Great weather, dining & entertainment that rivals all but a handful of cities - and obscenely affordable vs. almost any other city that offers what Vegas does.
6 picks in the first 4 rounds.......955876 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 02, 2026 10:35 pmZero way for you to know this unless you know him or have him quoted saying he would take the Steelers job if offered. And no, Kubiak didn't turn down the Steelers nor would he have if offered.
