A take on McCarthy

Post by the-other-burg » Sun Jan 25, 2026 8:56 pm

Does anyone think maybe this team needs a couple of years of major cleanup, the induction of a solid set of coordinators. and a Vet HC to take the wheel from Tomlin and get the bus back on the road?

We all want young, innovative, fresh, I get it. But maybe we're best putting that kind of coach in after a couple of years of McCarthy carrying and cleaning out the baggage left over by Tomlin. Then add our young, new HC, with a clean slate to work with.

Putting a rookie HC in charge of this team might not be the best strategy at this time - because we have 20+ years of Tomlin that needs to be fixed first.

Just my thoughts - and trying to stay optimistic and see a logical reason for the hire.

Putting a rookie head coach in charge of a franchise with no franchise QB in sight is definitely a recipe for disaster.

Accept Rooney stated he had no intention of replacing Tomlin so in Rooney’s mind there isn’t 20 years of anything that needs to be fixed….

….the McCarthy hire is to keep the status quo

If McCarthy came in to clean house, trade off the older assets and start a true rebuild I could get behind that. The issue is they feel like they are close and are probably going to bring back Rodgers and more FAs and be stuck in the middle for the next 5 years.

Listen they need a fresh start let’s see who thd hires are hopefully not all cronies. But this is a big draft for Omar needs to find some WR help without question. They need an OG and S and another DL.

Dunce Rooney doesn’t believe bus has been off the road though. Dipshit thinks we’ve been a contender.

We haven’t. Not even close.

Whats to say that isnt the plan. He's in his mid 60s. Every other coach the Steelers have hired has been MUCH younger, Do we really think theyre gonna let McCarthy coach into his 70s?

I dont really buy it. McCarthy is way too long in the tooth to be a Pope like hire. The Rooney's would never outright say he's there for a few year rebuild, even if he was.

My biggest concern about McCarthy medium term is his own health.

There are no fat old men.

What's his cardiac metabolic and BP status?
The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

This is pretty much it for me. Art II sees nothing wrong with the state of things beyond the lack of QB and that's why this hire was made.

While Tomlin inherited a franchise QB, the prior two young coaches they hired did not.

I'm convinced they believe McCarthy is a QB Whisperer and he needs to be here for when they pick a QB in Rd 1. Get ready for Ty Simpson!

Ty Simpson is really no better than what we have with Howard. Their stats are pretty similar, but like I said, it's funny one guy is a 6th rounder and the other is a 1st rounder, go figure!

Just read the scouting report on Simpson. Not sure he's going to turn out to be anything special. He has a quick mind but once DC's got some film of him, his season crumbled! Only 15 college starts puts him in the same league as Mitch Trubisky and Anthony Richardson - not the greatest company!

There were supposed to be about six shiny new QB playthings in this draft and it's down to one...the only QB who outperformed expectations and will rightly be drafted number one.

This year was a record number of QB college disappointments.

And I'm not even sure Mendoza will be better than Howard.

Exactly. Last year it was like don’t take a QB this year because next year is loaded. Same as year before.

Things change. Guys reveal they are just not that good.

Do I trust the “Khan Artist” to get it right?

Not for a minute.

We got soooooo damn lucky with Ben. 2003 was literally like the best 6-10 season a franchise could ever have.

Dunce Rooney fails to recognize that.

The NFL has had a qb problem for years.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."

At the age of 81, McCarthy will die on the sideline in the third quarter of another exciting 12-10 slopfest. He'll be reincarnated as a wild hog and live out his days slathered up in pig shit and fucking beavers.

Yeah, and he is bringing former coaches that worked with him in. He's not looking at new up and coming guys. He, just like Tomlin, is stuck in the past. Our new DC is the Raider's DC, can't remember his name (just saw it on the news). Yeah, we get a coordinator that works for the worst organization in the NFL! We goin' places now!

This is mccarthy's dream job. My take is he'll do the 5 years on his deal and we'll see beyond that.

I'm liking that he's building his staff with faces familiar to him, and yes, familiar with AR as well. I'm hoping AR comes back, largely to help monitor and see if we have anything with Haaard, see if there's hope that for the guy who's yet to take a pro snap. If so, get him ready to be under center in '27. Either way, help Steelers prepare for 27. AR seems to be turning out to not be the asshole he was purported to be. Popular with his teammates, remaining liking Pittsburgh and able to maintain his privacy. Doesn't come in dressed to the nines on gameday like his cohorts in KC

After my initial negative about this, I'm in wait and see mode.

McCarthy is SAYING all the right things.

And he's managed to get Art II to open up the pocketbooks a little bit and expand the coaching staff.

Hell, he even told Pompeani he's a fan and a user of analytics, and even wants to use AI.

This is just talk, but at least it's not vacuous, empty talk like Tomlin used to do.

So I am in wait and see mode to see if this translates into results.
