Minter to the Ratbirds

Post by DumlinBumlinStumlin » Thu Jan 22, 2026 10:31 pm

Ravens hired Jesse Minter as their new head coach.

https://www.nbcsports.com/fantasy/footb ... ed33860000

Minter, 42, served as the Chargers’ defensive coordinator under head coach Jim Harbaugh over the last two seasons. He also held the same role with Harbaugh’s Michigan squad from 2022-2023. He had a one-year stint at Vanderbilt, serving as defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He worked for former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh before that, signing on as a defensive assistant in Baltimore from 2017-2018. He was promoted to assistant defensive backs coach in 2019 and promoted again to defensive backs coach in 2020.

but which harbaugh?

Anyway, i had minter and then hafley as easily the top two candidates among those we’ve interviewed, so not surprised they were the two that got hc positions.

I’d say both of them per the history

Firing Harbaugh to go with a guy who is known for working with Harbaugh's is an interesting choice. I'm sure he'll try to be his own man and all, but interesting. Didn't even seem to have much interest in offensive coaches, though I didn't follow their search that closely.

Hope they didn't put too much stock in his time at scUM (arguably his most successful 2 years in terms of winning and stats) too highly in the evaluation process, considering the big, fat asterisks involved.

I wanted no part of scUMinter.

the ravens D was close to the best in the league for the 4 years minter was an assistant there, and fell apart the year he left. Not that that was related. Then he was at michigan, and their D dominated, then he went to the chargers, and their D has ranked 8th on average while he’s been there (but better by points).

The other non-retread DCs we’ve talked to:
Hafley, average rank 8.5
Evero, average rank 15 (worse by points)
Weaver, 19 (same by points)
Shula, 21.5 (better by points)

Minter looked solid on paper.

Hiring him doubles the chances of Conor Stallions sneaking onto an NFL staff, so there's that

I guess I'll give him some points for his Ravens work, but the Steelers offense, the Browns offense and (on the not uncommon occasion they're missing Burrow) could skew those ranks. Chargers likewise benefited from games against the Raiders and Broncos offenses, and the last couple of years of suboptimal Mahomes play.

I give him no credit for scUM, because of the rampant, flagrant sign stealing in game prep and multiple recruiting violations casting doubt on how the talent was required.

Like I said to KC earlier, though, that's what makes horse racing.
