Random (and irrelevant) thoughts...
I soooo much want to like Mike Tomlin, I really do. And I get why he's so popular with the national media, Y'know, the people who don't watch the bullshit he puts on display week in and week out, like us asshats do.
Last night though brings him two of the things I've oft-posted about coach T:
*He's a gameday dumbfuck. How else does one explain handing the ball to the Harvard running back on 3rd & 8 inside the 30??? Ridiculous fuckin play call; cowboy fans must have loved that.
Then, not electing to preserve 10 seconds by using a timeout with 47 seconds left and cowboys inside the 1. Didn't work out this way, but gotta figure cowboys have a good chance to score on 2nd down, in which case you want every fuckin second possible to get in position for a potentially tying field goal.
So....gameday dumbfuck, no doubt.
*Tomlins greatest skill "is an exceedingly well developed line of bullshit." Please refer to the utter horseshit he delivered postgame last night.
One other thought. If there's a positive to be gleaned at this point,,it's that the final 8 games of the schedule don't seem so forboding, what with browns being terrible, bungals continuing to bungal, and eagles seemingly in disarray. Still good shot for a playoff berth. Yeah, I know...

Almost as dumb as not using the timeout was that Cowboys snapped it immediately after the runoff. They could have bled more clock.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:08 pmI soooo much want to like Mike Tomlin, I really do. I gotta give Cool Shades credit though. Just when I don't think I can fucking hate Mike Tomlin anymore than I already do, the dude finds a way to help me out.
You can set your fucking clock by it.
Why would you play for a field goal on your first drive? The drive that sets the tone for the game?
While I believe Fields can develop, just put Russ out there and see what happens. It can't hurt but I'm sure Tomlin will treat Russ like he's a rookie or like he's Mitch Trubisky and will force Wilson to play it safe.
I'm going to keep rooting for the Steelers. I will always hope they win, but watching them is pretty pointless these days.

imo, you have to put Russ out there.
Maybe he can make the opponent pay for loading the box all game long.
Maybe Tomlin will let Russ switch out of plays that are clearly not going to work.
Until they show they can make the opponent pay for loading the box, it's going to keep happening.
The QB has to see the hot route. he has to see the weakness in the coverage. He has to know how to beat what the D is giving him.
Fields hasn't shown he can do that.

Right!! Cowboys had no reason to do that. That said, I'd take McCarthy over Tomlin any fuckin day. He at least has some offensive chops, and the fact that he didn't get along with Aaron Rodgers is a plus. Greenfield, bishop Boyle...both plusses as well.SteelPro wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:13 pmAlmost as dumb as not using the timeout was that Cowboys snapped it immediately after the runoff. I can't disagree with your point, because for the last 4-6 years of Ben's career, he was doing the same shit.K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:26 pmOh, Russ will make them pay alright.anpsteel wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:22 pmimo, you have to put Russ out there.

The only difference was, once behind, or if the team were flat, he'd let Ben go Hurry Up, and then the Offense would move. Outside of those no huddle situations where Ben took control, the structured offense often looked like shit.
All of this goes to the addition point of, why bother even drafting another Rd 1 QB, as long as dipshit Tomlin is at the helm??

Too often Fields is throwing late, missing open receivers, and just not seeing the field/defense well.
Someone just posted a clip where Pickens is running a crossing route, and looks like he's making little effort. Fields throws it to him, but too late. Waay too late.
IF he throws the ball about a second earlier, it's likely a TD, or long completion, vs incomplete.
So, Pickens is a head case, but he's getting frustrated, in part, because the QB isn't delivering the ball when he should

I think Steelers win 10, and make the playoffs. They'll win next 3, lose in Washington, then win half of the remaining games including 4 of 6 vs afc norf. Russ is obviously a more talented passer than Fields. I would never argue that point and there is a possibility that Russ can rally the troops and make everybody around him better. Russ might even make Pickens happy so yes, at this point I would give Russ the ball even though I think Justin Fields still has a future in Pittsburgh.anpsteel wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 5:07 pmI can't disagree with your point, because for the last 4-6 years of Ben's career, he was doing the same shit.K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:26 pmOh, Russ will make them pay alright.anpsteel wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:22 pmimo, you have to put Russ out there.

That said, so many pass rushers come free at Fields, he often has to run for his life. Russ can't do that anymore.
I guess what I'm saying is that either way, especially with Tomlin at the helm, we're fucked. The roof probably won't fall in and Tomlin has a shot at his precious NHALS, but this team is in trouble.
Their whole approach to winning games is ass backwards in 2024. It would have worked in 1975. It isn't going to work now.
If they lose this Raiders game, shit could get real.

Dude is a genius. Who else is going to find a way to go 9-8 with a defense that holds opponents to >15 point. That is some turtleball genius right there. Dude better hope the defense doesn’t start scoring points. He may end up 10-7.
Fields's running prowess is going to get him brain damaged like Tua.
He got nailed twice yesterday pretty hard.
Did his Coach notice them and tell him to stop doing that?
Maybe the Harvard RB could work it into his schedule. He might be the smartest guy on the team.

In approximately 50 years of watching this team, I have never seriously considered stopping.
I am pretty close to that point.
Watching this team is an act of futility.
We know whats wrong. We see it weekly. For. YEARS.
And nothing changes.
Without the benefit of having an all time great QB to bail his ass out, he's hopeless.
It's my stubborn allegiance to the team that keeps me thinking, hoping, it will change.
Continuing the exact same behavior, and expecting different results.
That makes me insane

When Herbig went out yesterday, it was over. We can be down 1 impact OLBer. Not 2.
Not this defense. ALL of the pressure comes from our OLBers and Leal is hurt too (even though he just titty fights.)
They are struggling to stop the run and all offenses have to worry about now is stopping Watt and they will have all day to throw.
The Steelers will be lucky to win 1 of the next 3 games and they will need one of those OLBers to return for that to happen.

Fields can run and make some plays but his inaccuracy and sloppiness was also on display last night -- he is what he is and isnt goinf to improve.
Wilson has better accuracy but is a sitting duck wiht this OL and no run game
pick your poison
either equation ends in 9-8 and no playoffs or playoff blow out
only hope is NHALS ends ... this sitation is Not going to change until that changes.
Its an awful purgatory -- cant quit them after 45 years, dont expect success now or in the future and they dont even have a hard-nosed/smashmouth identity to pull for. and that purgatory is made worse in that noone is praying for us to get out -- the media, coaches and ownership says there is noting wrong and we should be happy.

I'm going to keep rooting for the Steelers. I will always hope they win, but watching them is pretty pointless these days.
I watched Russell Wilson in Denver enough times to say that yes...the guy can still move. He's not even close to being a statue. He's not Justin Fields on the move, but Justin Fields hasn't looked like Justin Fields running it here in Pittsburgh because of the neutered offensive scheme.
Mobile QB's often take a lot of sacks because they have too much confidence in their ability to move around. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady didn't fuck around with getting hit.
Wilson's problems, at least I maintain, are mental. Not physical decline.

Hope you're not right, KC, but you prob are. Yeah, I wasn't very optimistic seeing herbig limp off. Maybe highsmith is back next weekK_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 7:12 pmDude.....unless Highsmith or Herbig is miraculously back next Sunday, this team is FUCKED.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 5:20 pmI think Steelers win 10, and make the playoffs. They'll hold tiebreakers vs all wc competitors except indySteelperch wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 4:45 pmSwiss, we got 6 more wins in us this year. Take it to the bank. I’ll celebrate like it’s the SB when they hit win 9, because it is our SB. Sincerely - Mr Dry Bed

If this team wins more than three games in the last 8, I will send you a love letter. That is not happening with that schedule and this offense.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 5:20 pmI think Steelers win 10, and make the playoffs. They'll have all day to throw and a whole Beanie Bishop sized zone to throw to at will.K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 7:12 pm

The offense is no juggernaut by any means, but they took the lead late and the defense had to get one stop.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 8:42 pmIf this team wins more than three games in the last 8, I will send you a love letter. Wilson can still sling it and that may be enough to give the offense a spark, but Russ seems very, very indecisive when trying to run and behind this o-line, dude better make sure his insurance premiums are paid up.
It sure can't hurt giving Wilson a chance.
