If they don’t release a starter from 2023 and he doesn’t retire, chances are they’re not signing or drafting anyone who is going to immediately replace them. They don’t operate like that about 95% of the time. They will let those mediocre starters marinate for a long time before finally upgrading. They’re exactly like an old person with an iPhone5. It functions well enough and they don’t see any reason to upgrade, especially if it costs money.
Oh I agree. Trust me, I fully understand how the Steelers operate…frustrating as it is!
My issue is that there are more than a few positions on this squad that could use quality starters. Just listing the obvious ones, QB, C, OT, FS, CB, ILB, NCB, is more than a few. But there are also 3-4-5 other positions that could use a serious upgrade. Steelers are starting guys at too many spots that just aren’t good enough, IMO. And it seems that by using the term “mediocre starters” you would agree?
I assumed my "real starter" statement didn't need further explaining, but thank you @bradshaw2ben . I agree that they NEED to upgrade, but, as b2b stated (and I assumed others here realized by now), that's not how they operate. My apologies for assuming.

Click on the link and look at the orange-ish roster spot names -- that's their shopping list.
Looking down that defensive depth chart, it's almost mind-blowing we have that high a percentage of our cap sunk on that side of the ball. at least 5, maybe six positions are fringe NFL, for one reason or another. Surprised we got that one win we have without Watt.

Christian Wilkens would have been a monster signing.....

signed 4 years $110 million with Oakland.

How much of Cam Heywards $22.4 million could have gone towards this kid?
I don't know but Cam sounded uncommitted after the elimination loss to the Bills last year

But he quickly reversed that course.

He expects to be fully healthy next season.

Right now he's planning to get back to rag dolling OLs.

Would help to add a true 2-gap NT to the roster though.

Is he also planning on disappearing in the playoffs again? It'd be super cool if he didn't

Thanks for reminding us all (again) how crappy the defense was after Shazier got hurt in 2017, Deebo.

And therefore how essential it was to sign a player like Patrick Queen to try to fill that unceasing void at ILB that has existed ever since.

So who's left after day two of FA as far as top potential starters go?

SS: Kamren Curl is the best fit I see, maybe Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Jr.
CB: Kendall Fuller is the best fit.
C: Connor Williams (when health status checks out). Looking more like a top 3 draft pick.
OT: Looking more like a top 3 draft pick.

So because Shazier got hurt, it caused Heyward to be pushed around like a little bitch in the Jags playoff loss?
That's an odd connection, but please go on.

It wasn’t just Cam who fell apart that day vs. the Jags, it was the other 10 men on the defense, also.

Heyward averaged 2 QB hits in his 3 playoff games as a starter prior to 2017, but maybe you think that those tickle?

Vs. Buffalo earlier this year, on one leg, he had 6 combined tackles.

Where is it that you find his performances lacking?

Hunter Renfrow was released. Another good Wr to sign for the Steelers.

His stats in the playoffs speak for themselves
And ironically the deepest we went into the playoffs was the year he was hurt.

I think that’s a good signing if they do it. Maybe bring him and Boyd in and then you don’t need a WR until RD2 or later.

I think CGJ went back to Philly.

I want them to sign Kam Curl so bad. I think he's the kind of guy they'd be interested in too. At least I hope.

Hadn't seen that yet, thanks.

I agree on Curl. I think he'd be a perfect fit with Minkah!

In 8 career playoff games he has 14 tackles and 5 assists with 1 sack, 2 tfl, 6 QB hits, 1 PD,
The year he was on injured reserve the Steelers beat Miami, KC and lost to the Pats in the AFC champ.

Free Agency Day 3

Whirlwind as usual, but still some talent to be had

After their big Patrick Queen splash, YOUR Steelers will dumpster dive.

But for whom?

Safety?

Minkah’s body breaking down.
Kazee also has a proven fragility

Kam Curl and Justin Blackmon a couple of the bigger names still out there.
Jordan Fuller a Buckeye Tomlin no doubt familiar with
Jeremy Chinn a hybrid type that had some board mock fans

Corner?

Donte Jackson can run. Can he play?
5’10 180 screams slot guy

I still think that need at least two more corner additions. Thankfully a deep corner draft.

A repeat of the Pat Pete experience scares the shit out of me.

Just say NO, Omar.

A Stephon Gilmore signing would be a quieter version of that.

STFU PAT, STFU!!!

Who else ya got?

Center?

Them boys went fast!

What’s left?

The draft.

That’s what’s left.

Assuming they don’t move Daniels over to center as B2B and others have suggested as an alternative.

Yep, barring an unforeseen player dropping to 20, I’m all aboard best offensive lineman available at 20, tackle, guard, center.

Build the trenches

Clean up Tombert’s mess.

Defensive line?

Lotta Cam bashing

Some of it deserved

Most of it bullshit by know nothing ham and eggers, but hey I admittedly root for my transplant hometown neighbors.

Would love some sort of re-worked contract.

I’d like Larry O to GO but can’t cut everybody. I guess he’s serviceable.

DeMarvin Leal got a Rd 1 grade from Colbert.
Shocking he hasn’t panned out (not).
Would love a DE upgrade through the draft.

Sheldon Rankins still out there to offer some space eating ability to let our new LB acquisition roam free.

Wide Receiver

I’m not an Artie Smith expert. I’m too busy despising his arrogant, pompous, condescending personality.

My take on his offense is that the WR1 will get the lion’s share of the stats. Think AJ Brown. Think Drake London (ish).

WR2 is a blocker. A dirty work type. He’s currently not on the Steelers’ roster.

Charles in jest tossed out the name, Mack Hollins. THANKFULLY he signed with the Bills. He sucks goat balls.
But that’s the class of receiver YOUR Steelers are gonna sign in FA.

Think former Artie fav from the Titans, Nicky Westbrook or Khadarel Hodge from the Falcons.

Some of y’all threw out the Tyler Boyd Pitt connection. Pretty sure he’s been a Steelers’ basher of late but could be just a rivalry thing.

Me?

If we’re dumpster diving like the Steelers I go with Cedrick Wilson Jr, he the son of former Steeler Cedrick Wilson Sr. He’s listed at 6’2 197. IF he blocks. He fits.

I think Noah Brown is still out there.

Calvin Ridley would be similar in style to the departed DJ but not happening.

I could see Tomlin digging the Odell Beckham vibe, but he’s not for Uncle Artie.

Man, I hope the Steelers get a good one in this reputedly deep WR draft.

The dilemma with this whole free agency exercise is weighing the players YOU want vs the players YOUR Steelers want.

Rarely do the two ever meet.

By my accounting, the Steelers still need starter capable players at:

C
FB (Heyward????)
#2 WR

Slot CB
SS

Not to mention loads of areas that could use an upgrade, for example OT and CB. And, depth areas: DL, WR

Hopefully, Khan picks up a C, FB, and SS in free agency and leaves the high draft picks for players at more premium positions (WR, CB, OT).

Good stuff, Drama.

Just on our WR front.....

I think they like these guys: Calvin Austin, Denzel Mims, Dez Fitzpatrick, and Marquez Callaway (in that order) way more than we realize.

Not saying they are relying on them to be major players, but I think they have more hope in them than we do. Yes, I know "hope" isn't a good plan.

I still expect one WR FA signing and one draft pick.

As a lifelong A’s fan, I loved when we had Dave Parker with McGwire, Canseco, and the two Hendersons- Ricky & Dave.

These days I’m a disgruntled A’s fan. Currently holding out.

This can’t be true. They really want to bring in a guy like Adams who is always injured, gives minimal effort/avoids contact as a SS and who literally gave up on most snaps last season? Plus he is just a generally shitty person?

We gotta be better than that. Do not do it!

I'm hoping it's wrong. Apparently that dipshit Andrew Fillipponi was saying they're going after Adams and he was right about Patrick Queen. Also the Russell Wilson connection.

Mack restructured and is staying.

Bengals just cut Nick Scott. 28 years old and experience at safety. Went to PSU.

What say you, Perch?
