They ABSOULTELY needed to go for the kill shot and they didn’t. Tomlin takes the ball out of Ben’s hands and into the hands of Ridley then asks Matakevich to block someone so Rosie can “fake” his way to a first down.
Now, Tomlin likely frees up everyone’s January. Thanks boss!

It looked like Chick was actually hampering Nix by pulling on the guy that was tacking him. Not that it was his fault.

Mike Tomlin used to dominate December. He’s lost 4 of 5 games and needed an absolute miracle to not beat the shitty ass Jags to lose 5 of 6.
So, if one of the things Tomlin defenders (what there, like three of these people left on this board) would say is that despite his blunders to inferior teams like the Raiders, Jets and Bucs, Tomlin ALWAYS has his boys ready to go when it counts in December, if that cannot be said anymore, then what?
But never a losing season...right...got it.
I was told that our slow start in September and October wouldn't matter because tomlin's teams always pull it together come December
Guess the Tomlin apologists got yet another one wrong

Aren't you the same guys who begged the Steelers to put Nix in and pound it in inside the 5? How is this any different? That's a goal line defense and teams run into that on the regular when they're inside the 5.
And, anyway, that's the 3rd down play of a series where they viewed it as a 4-down situation.

B2B, you're trying to reason with a frothing mob. I can't imagine what this board will be like if Baker can't get it done next Sunday (I think it's a 50/50 chance the Browns take 'em out). God forbid the Steelers don't make the playoffs every single year or else everyone should be fired and castrated. I actually think getting a nice serving of humble pie this year and missing the playoffs could ultimately be a great thing for this team for the next 2-3 years, but we'll see.
I stand by that Tomlin did a great job. We went into New Orleans and were the better team after just taking out Brady and the Pats. We just got completely shafted by the refs and had two heartbreaking fumbles. If you guys want to blame Tomlin for that, so be it, but I don't think it's fair. The third and 2 call made sense as we were going to go for it on fourth down if we were short. Fumbles happen. It sucks, but that's football.

No, that’s Mike Tomlin, shitty, sloppy, miss the playoffs after being 7-2-1, football. That isn’t necessarily football.
Missing the playoffs after being 7-2-1 should be a fireable offense. Let’s hope Baker Mayfield can bail his ass out.

Also, why is the everliving hell would you think missing the playoffs this year would do anything whatsoever to motivate this team? Do you mean because there is a slim chance Tomlin will be dismissed this season if they don’t make the dance after being 7-2-1? Then, just then, I agree with you.

Mike Tomlin is counting on you and those like you to blame the officials and the fumbles.
That way he doesn’t have to learn it’s his philosophy that caused the loss.

God forbid the Steelers don't make the playoffs every single year or else everyone should be fired and castrated.
Not every single year. But definitely this year. The year our division is so weak our biggest competitor just benched their long-time starting QB with over half the season in the bag.
A season we were once 7-2-1, firmly in control of said division, and again our biggest rival is making a QB change mid-season. So ya, most think we should have been able to make the postseason.
Can’t beat a 2 win team on the road.
A game left and we are left crossing our fingers the browns can win a game.
If you can’t see how poor Tomlin was this year you never will.
Shit, Morris Buttermaker could have gotten this team into the postseason. Tomlin literally snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.
Guy is a dunce.

If you're referring to today's game, I don't think he did anything wrong, his team played their hearts out, he managed the end of the game properly, the choice to go for it on STs was probably the only thing that gave the offense time at the end of the game. He just ran into a really good team in a really tough place to play and his guys put the ball on the ground.
You want to say fuck him for Oakland, sure.
Today, though? Today they went toe to toe with the Saints, weathered the officials absolutely gifting the Saints 7 points, and just didn't get it done at the end. It's a damn shame, because they played probably their best game this year.
Really, B2B?
Ben Roethlisberger torched the Saints for 146 yards through the air in the 3rd Quarter to take the lead and then got a defensive stop right at the beginning of the 4th Quarter.
So naturally it was right and proper of Mike Tomlin to take the air out of the ball and go run-heavy?
And on a critical third down put the ball in the hands of Ridley instead of Ben?
And have Ridley run up the gut into a stacked box against the #1 rushing defense in football?
This is proper end-game management? To once again put trying to bleed the clock ahead of burying an opponent?
And rely on lesser players and trick plays to pick up critical downs?
Bed wetting after the game is always more effective

I was one of the guys who wanted Nix on the field and I still do. Love Nix, he can run, block and catch.. Love him over a 3rd WR option for us right now. Nix, Samuels. Brown, JuJu, McDonald to me is a great package of players, but throw the football out of that mix sometimes and leave Ridley on the bench.

Tomlin is not a perfect coach, but the fact is that at the end of the game we were driving to at least tie the game if not outright win it against a 12-2 Saints team in their house. In a game where the damn near any close call went against us, the Saints were HANDED seven points on the worst pass interference call I've seen in my life on what should have been a turnover on downs, and after a heartbreaking fumble and a gut-wrenching drive by Brees to take the lead.
This team played great. They played like one of the best teams in football. They had been dealt a ton of adversity but like all Tomlin teams they were tough as nails and ready to win that big game, but we fumbled again. It's mind-blowing, but it happened. Sometimes you get the breaks, sometimes you don't.

TB, c’mon...how can a team continue to find ways to lose with this kind of talent?
I just read an article that stated this team could go down as the most talented in the MODERN ERA to not make the playoffs! When you have a HOF QB like Ben, you lean on him MORE in these big spots of games...this guy goes out of his way to do the opposite. Can’t wait to try to get the running game going no matter what, kill clock, and at times try to preserve games with his worst unit on the field in the end, his inopportunistic and dumb defense. BTW, how about those fucking 3 points that they gave up before half that nobody is talking about? Tomlin had his hands all over that, fucking off the IR Ted Ginn making a big play...getting out of bounds so easy with no timeouts??!! 3 points was the difference. Yeah, Tomlin had a great game.

Post like this continue to demonstrate the depth of stupidity Tomlin apologists are willing to mine to support Tomlin.
First, you think it’s good that with an aging all star at QB and aging all star at WR it’s likely a good thing to miss the playoffs. That is literally the dumbest comment ever uttered on the internet. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but not sure it is.
Second, you fail to understand that many of the reasons we lost these games was because of sub optimal decisions by the HC. Of course, if Tomlin makes all of those decisions optimally, no guarantee the record is better but highly likely.
Third, you seem to arguing against straw mans. I didn’t have a problem with a 3rd run; I had a problem doing it in the formation in which we ran the play. Let’s say you were going for it on fourth regardless. Wouldn’t you still want the optimal play on 3rd down? Why run a play with shit players with a shit chance of picking it up?
I didn’t have a problem going for it on fourth down; I had a problem doing it with our 1st string FB. In short, in key plays, it’s necessary to have your best players out there.
Yes, Tomlin gets some credit for getting his team in a competitive game against the Saints despite the shit calls. Highly likely Tomlin wins if he put his players in the best position to win.
But please, keep telling us Baghdad is fine, Bob.

And it has already been written but it’s really not about losing to the saints in the Superdome. It’s getting swept by the west. It’s about not being ready to deal with the browns on opening day. It’s about the incessant penalties. It’s about not knowing what the fuck to do on a free kick. It’s about fucking stupid game decisions. Blown leads. And the list goes on and on.
Tony fucking Romo routinely calls out the stupid. Why the fuck is this so painfully difficult?? Mike Tomlin is a mediocre head coach at best. This is a sloppy undisciplined team with a pathetic understanding of game situations. It starts at the top.

His defense, which hadn't allowed a score since the first Saints possession of 2nd half, which on three previous possessions had gone 3 & out, 4 & out, blocked a FG....weren't capable of keeping the Saints from driving the length of the field for a touchdown.
Mr. "don't live in our fears," and "defend every blade of grass," is suddenly fearful that his D can't keep the Saints from driving about 80 fuckin' yards....can't defend 80 blades of grass rather than just 47?
It wasn't a yard to go, it was five to go....and entrust your season to your fullback who is rarely on the field?
It was time to punt the ball away, have the defense to simply not allow Brees and the Saints to go 80.
It can’t be said any better. Everything I thought in the moment and still think now. The second I saw the guy go in motion I said out loud “oh please god no.” While on the subject.... why send the guy in motion?? Telegraph the shitty call on top of everything else wrong with this unforgivable stupid call.
They’d been doing that recently as a way of slowing down pressure...not sure that really telegraphed anything.
How about this? I knew beyond any doubt a fake was coming. And I’m just some asshole sitting on my couch.

Closing tight games is what the Steelers just could not figure out this season. Whatever ephemeral quality that makes that possible, i'm pretty sure a lot of it boils down to coaching and attention to details within the power of a head coach to influence. This is where the rubber hits the road for me. The Cleveland tie and the Oakland game. As many times as we've been snakebitten, win just one of those very winnable games, and you are a very good position to be division winner for the seventh time in twelve seasons in an AFC more wide open perhaps than any time in the Tomlin era.
In the end, the Faustian bargain with Mike Tomlin is that he more often than not gets you to the dance (8 out of 11 seasons so far). He still excels at the fundamental leadership qualities you need to be an NFL coach - with all the drama that was not in his control that helped lead to this freakshow of a season, at times I admired the man even moreso than usual for keeping the team competitive. But if Cleveland fails us this week, I would like to see ownership surprise us all for once this offseason and seriously crank the heat up under Tomlin's seat.
The somehow is the somehow
